Yamaha VL, PLG150-VL card

Unread post by javelin276 » Thu Oct 05, 2017 3:49 am

I don't see any forum catagories for VL Instruments, so I guess here in the 'Other' category works.
There are a few people with Yamaha VL Instruments, the VL1, VL1m, VL7, VL70m, EX5, EX5R, and the PLG100-VL and PLG150-VL cards.
Not many people have ever heard examples of VL and there aren't many example videos on YouTube, so I put a few together using the Yamaha demo songs that came with the instruments. Here's the first one, which should link to all of the rest, there are 9 now.

Must agree with you wholeheartedly, Thor.

I have an elderly PLG100-VL installed in an MU1000 (alongside DX and AN cards) and also a VL70m too.
The plan is, one day, to get back to playing my Akai EWI 4000s through the vl70.

Is the rig yours in the link you posted? Nice set up.

Nice Trumpet! The FS1R works pretty well with breath control too.

Hi John. The rig in the photo is a friend of mine's. I have an MU2000 with two PLG150-VL cards in it. I've been lusting after a VL1m, but they're so expensive (when you can find one) I decided to get the second PLG card so I wouldn't 'accidentally' spend over $3000 on a module I don't really need. I use a breath controller and a Motif-XF with aftertouch as a controller. I'm just starting to get my head around it again. It's been a while since I've played it.

Hi Guys, I found something interesting while using (2) PLG VL cards at once. On about half of the VL patches so far I can play 2 VL notes at a time! The MU2000 is keeping track of the last 2 notes keyed and it's playing both PLG cards from the same midi channel. Both cards are PartAssign=01 and a VL patch is selected for Part1. Nice! It's operating just like a VL1m would. I didn't expect that. Way to go Yamaha!

I am more than happy to give you a VL section but then I do rely on you all to keep it busy and post as much info as you can.

We have created sections before where members have said there was a lack of info and support only to find there were just a handful of posts and it was left to die, hence why you find some things in these general categories.

So if you want a VL/PLG section let me know :)

Saul,

I'm not really sure that there'll be enough traffic for a separate section.
It's one of those things that pops up now and again amongst the small number of enthusiasts, isn't it?
Then again, I could be (often am) wrong. ;-)

Thor,
Fascinated to hear that you can assign two PLG VL's to the same channel and get polyphony.
I didn't think it would be "permitted" to assign two devices to the same channel.
That's something that wouldn't have occurred to me to even try ... duh!

I must try hooking up my controller keyboard to an MU1000 and see if I can assign the same channel to a VL and an AN card.
That might prove interesting.
...
A VL and an AN and a DX card!!!
Mind boggling. (Well to my tiny mind!)

Thoughts:
If one part assigns, initially, the two VL's to separate channels, then one can assign a different patch for each PLG VL.
Then part assign the 2nd of the VL's back to the same channel as the first and play both.
Result, e.g., oboe and flute.
What would be interesting would be if one can get one instrument to play a fifth higher by initial assignment.
Harmony!
Can one assign an interval offset?

I think we can create a section for VL/PLG and see how it goes. If it appears to be lacking in posts over say the next 6 months then just merge it back into the general category?

Hi Saul, The section might see more traffic if it addressed all of the PLG cards as well as VL like you're suggesting.

Hi John, I hadn't thought about mixing VL, AN, and DX cards on the same Part. I tested it out and it didn't work, I could SELECT VL or AN but not both at the same time. Two VL cards works, though. Yamaha designed that capability in, apparently.

I wasn't able to assign two different patches, the two VL cards take on the patch assigned to Part1. Sorry.

I'm not sure how to note-shift one card and not the other to get an interval split. My MU-2000 didn't have note-shift or detuning as an option isolated to just one of the VL cards. That seems to be a Part control instead.

Any other ideas you want to test out?

I think I will make a section for the other PLG cards but keep the VL cards in with the VL1 etc and see how it goes.

Might it be an idea to add the PLG100 and 150 DX cards to the DX section of the forum and then all the other others, i.e. those that aren't a specific synthesis type, e.g. DR, XG, VH, PF, AP etc., to a PLG non-synthesis card section? :?:

PLG100-SG card

Unread post by javelin276 » Thu Oct 12, 2017 5:26 am

There is also the PLG100-SG card everyone forgets about. I have the manuals for that one translated into English on my website, if anyone needs them.

PLG150-VL card Thru the PLG100-VH card?

Unread post by javelin276 » Fri Oct 13, 2017 9:38 pm

Hey John, I've got a question for you. Have you ever routed your PLG100-VL card through the VH card?
I'm wondering if it could be used to increase the monophonic VL card up to 4-note polyphony.
It has an interval mode too, so two notes at a specific spacing like you asked earlier might be possible.
I have a PLG100-VH card, but it isn't installed right now.

Hi Thor,

No, I've never tried that. Never even thought about it for that matter.

It might be worth a try mightn't it?
Let us know how it goes if you do.
