Re: keyboard wizard

That would be Michael Walthius. I ran across his work 20 years ago!

Re: New FM-X Programming Articles at www.YamahaSynth.com

Hmmm. That's really nice, I didn't know Reaper had that tool in it. The changes are very subtle, just enough to fix the vocal track, not so much that you'd ever think "AutoTune".

Re: New FM-X Programming Articles at www.YamahaSynth.com

Hi Parametric, I don't think Vocaloid ever made it out of the Manga arena. Looking at the available voices for it, they're all Japanese Manga, and mostly young girl voices. There is also free clone program called Utau which is just as high quality as Vocaloid, with user programmable voice capability...

Re: New FM-X Programming Articles at www.YamahaSynth.com

Yes, MAX/MSP. It was originally developed at IRCAM back in the late 1980's by Miller Puckette, who is now a music professor at the University of California, San Diego. His partner took it commercial and it became MAX/MSP/Jitter, currently $400 a copy. There is an open source version called Pure Data...

Re: New FM-X Programming Articles at www.YamahaSynth.com

Hi Manny! Yes, your piano patches are the best FM pianos around! Piano players are funny animals, though. Really picky. They hear things in the sound that I can't even begin to pick up on, which is why my Motif-XF has 22 different acoustic pianos in it. The Montage probably has even more. It's a tes...

Re: New FM-X Programming Articles at www.YamahaSynth.com

I like Manny's articles, he's probably the best FM programmer there is. But he does everything by ear... That's not a skill you can pick up easily, it takes years of practice to get proficient by ear. I figured out a different method to get the basic timbre right, a visual method using a Spectrum An...

Re: President of UOKiK has initiated proceedings against Yamaha Music Europe

I don't really think the case will stick. The internet is a free market and competition is fierce. If Yamaha charged too much for their keyboards, customers have the ability to switch to Korg, or Roland, or whomever. Every manufacturer can set their own prices, then the free market determines who wi...

Why Vibrato?

OK, basic music question that hit me the other day while listening to Christmas music. Why do we as humans like vibrato? What purpose does it serve? Isn't it harder to hit and sustain a steady on-pitch note rather than one that uses vibrato? Is embellishment the only purpose? I understand why we lik...

Re: Is music really becoming bad lately?

Fascinating analysis. Compression certainly does ruin the sound quality, as illustrated very plainly in your graphs. What's the use of buying a superb stereo system if all the music you listen to is homogenized and compressed? I like to listen and feel like I'm in the same room as the musicians. I s...

Re: Yamaha EX5 VST by Gospel Musicians

I listened to the demo video. He admits the VL is all sample based (the one short sax riff he played sounded like a sample, not like VL). He implies that the AN is 2-oscillator emulation (so it might be similar, hard to tell since he didn't play any presets). The AN section looks very simplified com...

Re: What else sounds like a DX7?

There are at least two other Yamaha synths that can load DX7 patches and sound just like it, including the SY77 and SY99. They sound exactly the same as the DX7mkII, possibly better since there are a large number of effects available that the DX7 doesn't have. There are two synth engines in these, t...

Re: Montage to FS1R voice converter?

I thought about this at one time, but since I don't have a Montage or easy access to FMX patches I didn't pursue it. I don't see Yamaha taking this up though, not enough FS1R's in the world to make it profitable. It shouldn't be all that difficult with the right documentation, it's just a matter of ...

That works much better! Thanks! The VP1 is so unique and so rare there isn't much available to listen to.
