Re: MU2000 EX and 2 PLG VL cards = VL1?

Manny,

Thanks very much for clearing that up. Looks like I am better off treating the cards as separate monophonic units in the Motif Rack ES. Setting the voices to Polyphonic mode messes up the note transitions, especially legato. At least that's how it sounded when I tried it.

Re: MU2000 EX and 2 PLG VL cards = VL1?

(snip)... What do I need to do to get both VL cards to play in unison in the MU2000, or in the cross fade mode like the VL1-m? (snip)... I don't think any solution beyond the VL1m will actually do the automatic crossfade. I'm curious to what you are referring in regards to "crossfade modes" on the ...

Re: Polyphony Expansion mode, Motif, S80, MU, CS6X, etc.

I found out just recently that this doesn't work quite the same way when using the Motif series as a host. I moved two PLG-150VL cards into a Motif Rack ES. After turning on the "polyphony expansion" on the Utils menu I expected both cards to start acting as a 2-note polyphonic VL card. Instead I fo...

Re: Polyphony Expansion mode, Motif, S80, MU, CS6X, etc.

True, if the host instrument allows you to control the "expansion" feature each plugin card can be used individually. The Motif and S80, S90 allow the user to set that, but I haven't found that option on the MU-2000 or 128 yet. The MU-2000 EX does allow you to set each PLG card to a different part w...

Want to hear some wild Chapman Stick... listen to King Crimson, Three of a Perfect Pair. Tony really goes to town with that thing. Heard that album in college. First time I ever heard a Stick.

Re: Finally got a Motif (Rack ES), What's with that piano?

That's good to know. Those are very cool machines. Unfortunately, I think the market for sound design monsters like that has shrunk to the point most manufacturers simply won't risk it. That kind of experimental synth now only exists in the rack modular market. Arturia made a nice attempt as well wi...

Yeah those Nord modulars are awesome. G2... very nice!

How do you deal with the programming software these days? I have considered them in the past but always backed away because of the lack of support for modern OS's.

Re: Finally got a Motif (Rack ES), What's with that piano?

The "mod matrix" in Yamaha synths has been called the "control set" or "controller set" for a while. The ES has it as well. The problem is that the control set is limited to only using real-time control inputs as sources. So, MW, aftertouch, MIDI CC, pedal, etc... sure. The power of a real mod matri...

Re: Finally got a Motif (Rack ES), What's with that piano?

I answered my own question. Yes the Montage finally got a modulation matrix. I don't know if it's as good as the mod matrix on the 16 year-old Alesis Ion, but at least it's a step in the right direction.

which I continued to use out of preference until I got my Kronos in 2014, and noticed a step change in quality in what it could do (uncompressed, unlooped samples, sympathetic string resonance, etc). Yeah, the Kronos is on my list. I just don't have room for any more keys at this point. Yamaha fina...

Re: Finally got a Motif (Rack ES), What's with that piano?

Okay maybe I was being a bit tough on it. :-) It's not really embarrassingly bad, but it's not good in isolation all because that loop is too short to pick up the longer string resonances. Even the S80 loop is long enough to pick up the resonances. Maybe shortening the decay will help a little. I'm ...

Finally got a Motif (Rack ES), What's with that piano?

I've had my S80 for years and it's still a thing of beauty. The action is just incomparable IMO. Always wanted a Motif but they were out of my price range. So recently I came upon a very clean Rack ES for a good price and jumped on it. Woohoo, finally got a Motif! I know I am late to the party here ...

Wow, glad you're okay Jesse. Here in Florida hurricanes are bad but because we don't have the elevation changes the waterway flooding isn't nearly as dangerous - unless there's a huge storm surge.

Re: Replacement for the LCD Display, CCFL & Inverter $20

These displays are still available, and if you like the standard Fusion reversed blue LCD you can use the LED backlight bar from the LCD listed above to replace the old CCFL backlight. This requires a power resistor and a knowledge of soldering but works quite well. The details of the backlight swap...

Polyphony Expansion mode, Motif, S80, MU, CS6X, etc.

I finally found a reference in a Yamaha doc as to why two PLG-150VL boards will automatically act like a two-note polyphonic VL board. It's a standard feature of the Motif, S80, CS6X, and obviously the MU series as well. This behavior is the same in any case where multiple (up to 3) identical PLG bo...
