Midi data error

Unread post by Remaxman » Tue Oct 30, 2018 8:58 pm

I have a cvp 701. Most midi’s play fine. But some midis when I try to load give a error “Data hasn’t been loaded properly”. Any ideas what I’m doing wrong? It’s from a USB drive.

Thanks in advance.

There are different formats in the midi-file-types.
Maybe that's the reason ?

That would be my guess too . . . .

Midi files come in two basic "flavours" Type 0 and Type 1 . . .

Is there anyway to convert it to a format that my piano understands? I pulled it into Garage band and it doesn’t work either.

My own feeling is that the problem is something in the Header of the midi file . . .

You'll need an editor to view/alter the header . . . . not sure what the popular choice is ATM . . . .

I would inspect the header of a file that DOES play OK in your Piano, and compare it to the one that DOESN'T,

and see if there is something you can alter . . . . Save the edited file and try it . . .

Our member <SysExJohn> is an expert on Midi - probably best to ask him

John also has his own Forum which is dedicated to Midi - in which there are many Tutorials . . .

If you attach the file to a post, I can take a look at it for you.

Or ...
you could try Anvil Studio, a free downloadable DAW. It may actually amend the file for you automatically if the error is small.
Another freebie to try is Sekaiju but you have to change the language from Japanese to English.

Ah! But you say Garage Band which means you're using a Mac.
The above two are PC only I believe.

Thanks for the advertisement, Chris! :D

@parametric: Chris, there's also a type 2, but you're forgiven for forgetting about it because it seems like no one ever uses it. :D

@Remaxman: In addition to the programs that John mentioned, Jørgen Sørensen has a utility called "MIDI and Style File Checker" that will read a MIDI song file or a Yamaha style file to check it for "compliance to the MIDI Specification" and display a list of errors found:

jososoft.dk/yamaha/software/midicheck
Michael Rideout
Current keyboards: Yamaha YPT-400, PSR-E433, PSR-E443, PSR-EW400, MX49 BK
Current controllers: M-Audio Axiom 61-II
Previous keyboards: Farfisa Matador 611; Casio CTK-710
