KORG Wavestation Software Synth

A ground-breaking when it was introduced in 1990 the KORG Wavestation has garnered something of a cult following and deservedly so. Even decades after it's release the Wavestation can still produce sounds that would be hard to create on any other synthesizer.

KORG Wavestation Software Synth

Unread post by Saul » Wed Feb 11, 2015 9:44 am

The WAVESTATION software synthesizer provides all 484 waveforms and 55 effects found on the WAVESTATION series (including the WAVESTATION-SR!), with 32 digital oscillators, 32 digital filters, 64 envelope generators, and 64 LFOs that allow letter-perfect replication of the three- dimensional WAVESTATION sound, famed for its time-varying timbral change.

In its new software incarnation, the original editing structure has been preserved, while giving you a redesigned graphical user interface that takes advantage of the intuitive operation possible with software. All of the WAVESTATION's factory preset programs, 550 performances, and 385 patches are included. You can also import any WAVESTATION series data that has been stored in .SYX format.

FWIW, speaking as an owner of both the software Wavestation and a real Wavestation SR I have to tell you it is scarily spooky how close they sound - so much so that I am not sure I could actually tell them apart in a blind test. Were I pressed I would say that although very marginal with both dry the software version sounds a little clearer through my FW-410 but the hardware version has a little more depth and richness.

FWIW, jima - I would say you have answered the first, and probably MOST IMPORTANT question on the list, that a prospective purchaser would ask. ((i))

From what you say - its would seem to be a job "well-done" . . . .

I can't do that test as I don't have the hardware, but I am quite impressed with the soft synth version. And of course wave sequencing lives on in the Kronos HD-1 Engine :)

For those interested in some classic Wavestation patches, Karma-Labs are selling the two Dreamwaves collections, but it's not obvious that they are doing so!

Dreamwaves (For the Korg WaveStation, WaveStation A/D, WaveStation SR, and Korg Legacy WaveStation softsynth.) This classic set of sounds for the Korg WaveStation by noted British sound designer Paul Osborn is once again available.

I know which one I'd prefer in a live situation. :)

I wonder if anyone ever made a Wave RAM card system like the one Brian has made for the SY/TG. I think the SR has a PCMCIA slot and someone wrote a program to do it yonks ago IIRC. It's all gone hazy now.

Anyone else remember the Zadok Sam1? That was the kiddie but it wasn't cheap.

Long Gone: Far too much gear from the 80's and 90's that went out the door for £££! Moved to soft synth city instead.

Well there has been a DIY project that was demoed in this video, and now it looks as if a small company called WareRex came up with a solution that is user editable.
