http://fr.audiofanzine.com/synthe-numer ... 31466.html

Bing Translator makes of this:
"Another big rumor that ran in the digital pipes for a few days, the synthesizer Yamaha mounting. Here is the first info.

And after the first information listed by some retailers (although whole heard to be confirmed by Yamaha), this is in fact not one, but three versions of this new synth, inspired by the last Motif XF, of the mark, you can in fact choose between models in 61, 76 and 88 keys.

The big novelty on this mount, Yamaha has combined two synthesis engines: the AWM2 for playback of samples, and the FM - X, manufacturer demonstrating the return in force of synthesis at frequency modulation.

Here are the details of this Yamaha mounting:
Reading samples and FM FM Synthesizer
Velocity with aftertouch sensitive 61, 76 and 88-key keyboards
256 voice polyphony
32 parts
32 built-in effects
4 GB memory for waveforms
Color LCD display
8 rotary encoders surrounded by LED
8 faders
Pitch bend and modulation wheels
Touch tape
Motor Motion Control for interaction with sounds
Super Knob to control macro several parameters at once
Arpeggiator and sequencer integrated
Line input
Outputs line and headphones
Trio MIDI and MIDI over USB
Inputs for switch pedal, sustain and expression
Can function as a MIDI via USB for STAN controller

No information regarding the rates of these mounting new, that we will not fail to go discover the week next to the NAMM Show 2016."

Oh yeah, and the Novation KS4 is now hooked up again(even though it has to rest vertically when not used)!

SeaGtGruff wrote:Regarding voiced versus unvoiced, I'm reading online that it means pitched (voiced) versus unpitched (unvoiced), and I'm also seeing that two differences between DX-FM (apparently: FX as implemented on DX synthesizers) is that (1) the modulator operator is a musically-tuned frequency determined by the key being played, and (2) the operators (oscillators) are all sine waves. I don't know how accurate that description is, but from that I would hazard a guess that unvoiced operators have fixed frequencies rather than frequencies which vary in accordance with the key being played.

EDIT: If that's correct, I guess you could compare an unvoiced operator to a LFO which controls vibrato or tremolo or some other modulation effect, except presumably it doesn't need to have a sub-aural frequency rate.
The idea of the fixed operators is to synthesise formants, which tend to be fixed in frequency. This is what gives the FS1r it's Vocal character. And of course you can sequence the formants to create speech. Which is quite amazing when you first hear it, but a little bit gimmicky, and hampered because Yamaha never released an editor for creating your own formant sequences (FSEQs). And worse, if you wanted to use custom FSEQs you had to give up half of the voice memory to store them. Typical Yamaha kludge!

Some novel uses of the fixed operators can be found in some performances where they are used to synthesise drums whilst leaving the usual operators free for making voices.

And later FM implementations like the SY and FS1r allowed you to use waveforms other than sine waves for even more harmonic complexity.

I note with interest the inclusion of 'CV' there? That will be of interest to a fair few people. Also aftertouch across all three keyboards? At last one of the big three brings back an important control element.

Would like to know more about that flash ram. Is it the same as used in the XF/MOXF?

Although the Montage bears similarities to the MOXF in looks it seems to be a very different beast under the hood.

Aftertouch on a 5 octave board may actually get me GASing here.
The CV, I suspect is a misunderstanding. It so doesn't go with a workstation that even has aftertouch!
What voltage would it send if not a monophonic board?

The touchtape I guess means that there's no fancy 'wave ones hand in the air' control...

Don't know, maybe it's switchable in some way? Never used CV myself but I can imagine it would be handy for some people.

The aftertouch is a big thing though and something I have long missed since the Fusion. It's amazing how useful it becomes when you don't have it!

I would imagine you could sell the MOXF and somewhat mitigate the price of the Montage by doing that. The Montage, on specs alone is everything the MOXF is plus another synth and aftertouch ;) I could make a good case for buying one myself even though I don't really need it.

Never say never, but the thing isn't even out yet!

I'm still sceptical about the CV, that together with gate is like a one-note-only-MIDI that the all analogue monophonic guys are using... but we'll see when it's actually here. :-)

Hello Saul!
It really seems to be the expected "Hypersynth"?
"It has got the LOOK!" ... I expected! (But AWM2 + FM ???...)
That machine must be "WOW!!!" !

Remember my predictions all over the years! (But AWM2 + FM ???...)

Hint: ROLAND and KORG are not asleep!
If we are lucky, the NAMM 2016 really is the SYNTH REVOLUTION!

According to a Gearslutz post it's 8 op FM with 128 voices + 128 voices AWM2 = 256 voices in total:
https://www.gearslutz.com/board/11616114-post245.html

Sounds like a SY99 on steroids with the FS1R FM engine... 8O

But since this will be replacing the Motif XF I'd expect it to be priced similarly as the Motif XF, so way out of my price range, I simply cannot justify to myself spending that kind of money on a synth (but I might buy one second-hand in 10 years from now ;) ). At least I'm glad it's not a temptation for me to break my new-years resolution. :)
(the Korg Minilogue is the one that's tempting me at only 599 Euros... )

Thanks Tux that is very much appreciated :)

When we spoke to Yamaha last year they said they wanted to replace the MOXF. They didn't mention the XF. So not sure where exactly the Montage sits. A Price of $1500 has been mentioned but that would put it in MOXF territory or close enough. At that price and given what we know and have seen at the moment which, granted is not a massive amount of info, I would probably be tempted to buy one.....if it sounds good and is fairly user friendly that is.

Looks amazing, but I need to know what it sounds like....

I might now be G.A.S.ing a little .... 8O

After all I have said about Yamaha even if "only" AWM2 and FM-X, then I might have to support them. I need good performance features as well to replace the EX5.

So I am watching with interest now.....
