Yamaha mg10xu

Unread post by stuhughes » Mon Jan 20, 2020 1:24 am

Hi all, newbie here, I am a solo singer and use all Yamaha equipment drx12 and the 12 sub. I use the mg10xu and have just bought a dbr10 for a new stage monitor but when I plug my 2 quarter Jack's from the monitor out L and R into a single jack in the back of the dbr 10 I get the music coming out as normal but the mic only comes through once I turn on the fx button and then it's very washy sounding and sounds very heavily fx'd if that makes sense. Even though the right sound from the mic is coming out the main speakers. My apologies for not being very technical but can anyone help. Tia

Hi stuhughes - and welcome to the forums . . . .

I would guess you need to switch OFF the FX on the MG10XU . . . ?

Check the User guide <Applying Effect> item 3 . . . .

also, look at <Top Panel Channel Selection> item 8 . . . . . turn the FX for the Mic channel down . . ?

Thanks for the reply guys, the mic is only coming through when the fx is turned on although the music is coming through fine. Turn the fx off the mic disappears altogether. I have spoken to one of the guys at music matter where I bought the dbr10 from and he seems to think it's the lead I am using. He thinks its causing phase reversal, (like the vocal cancelling on a karaoke machine) so he's told me to get a balanced single jack to male xlr and just come out the L monitor output. I'll give that a bash. 🙈

Hi Stu . . . .

The thing with Mixers, is to study and fix in your mind HOW the signal travels inside the Mixer . . . .

The Quality of the descriptions in the Manual is variable and often not explained very well.

In this case the FX and AUX level . . . . I couldn't find an AUX level control . . .

I suspect it has a shared identity with the FX Level - depending on how you have set it up . . . . ?

In the end, just try sitting in front of it and try different output sockets together with knob twiddling . . . .

You should eventually arrive at the setup YOU understand - that does what YOU want . . . .

Often quicker than trying to Psych-out the Manual Writers . . . .

Just to add a little to the discussion, I found a functional diagram of the MG series here:

https://usa.yamaha.com/files/download/o ... iagram.pdf

I found I had to magnify the diagram quite a lot in order to be able to read it.

Maybe this can help us decode what's happening? (Click on the image to expand it.)

Taking a quick look at the circuit I posted above, I'm not surprised that you're getting nothing from the mic at the monitor out.

A stereo monitor of the mic input is not available with this mixer.
What can be connected is a mono monitor (normal) but on the "Aux (FX) send" socket.
Try connecting there would be my suggestion.

If you'd like an explanation of the diagram, please tell me and I'll try to oblige.

Ok thank you. I will try that. Do you think the audio will come out also if I come out the fx out. Also how would I control the levels from the mixer coming out my monitor?

The output to the PA system will come from the main stereo output sockets and be controlled by the big "Stereo Level" control.
The mix of your voice and the audio into the PA (which input?) are adjusted with the numbered level controls using the peak level indicators.

The level of your voice to the "FX send" socket is controlled by the "FX" control on that circuit (just above "Pan"), presumably input 1.
You can add some audio to your monitor feed by using the "FX" control on that (or those) circuit(s).

A right, sorry for being thick. 🙈 I always thought if I turned the fx up on the audio channel it would add fx the music also.

Umm, it will, depending on how the other controls are set.

Can I come back to you tomorrow, I'm just about to "hit the road" and won't be back until much later.

Sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday, Stu.

My car suddenly decided to give up the ghost and I spent most of the day trying to sort things out and get a temporary hire car.

I'll try to find some time later today to help you.

Aplologies.

Problem solved, thanks all. The new lead, single balanced 6.3 jack out the L monitor output to Male xlr works fine.
