Need 48 channel mixer with mostly stereo channels

Unread post by DKDiveDude » Fri Dec 22, 2017 3:14 pm

I need a mixer for my home studio with 20+ stereo synthesizers.

I am limited on space so I need a 48 channel mixer with as MANY, preferable 24 mixing stereo channels as possible. So no I can not use a 48 mono channel mixer as that would take up too much space in width.

Alternatively I can use two 24 channel mixers each with 12 mixing stereo channels.

Any suggestions?

Affordable 48 channel mixers don't exist, 48 channels is pro studio territory and costs $$$$$. I think you are approaching this from the wrong angle.

Do you really use all 20 synths at the same time?

If not then you should get some patchbays and a normal 16-24 channel mixer to which all synths are connected via patchbays. Then you simply route the synths you need in a session to the mixer on the patchbay.

I got a brand new Soundcraft M12 20 channel mixer (12 mono + 4 stereo + 4 separate stereo FX returns, so actually 28 channels) three years ago when it was approaching EOL for only 400 Euro and I'm still very happy with it. I haven't seen any other mixer with that many input-channels and features for similar money since, the new Soundcraft mixers that replaced the M-Series offer less inputs and cost more.
At the time I didn't even realise what a bargain that was, I only realised it recently when I noticed no other new mixer offers that many channels for around 400 Euros these days.

Low price and 48 channels are not something that normally go together although of course the OP didn't say anything about it needing to be at the budget end of the market :)

How much space is available for the mixer? Would something like the Behringer X32 fit in? Not exactly what you wanted but might fit the bill and is not overly expensive for the features it gives you.

Mixers with 48 channels cost 5 figure sums so this is not about the 'budget end'.
See: https://www.thomann.de/de/48-kanal_consolenmixer.html

But again, buying a mixer with as many inputs as you have synths is the wrong approach, with 20 synths patchbays are the only sensible solution.
Also because somebody who has already accumulated 20 synths will likely add a few more in the next few years and therefore run out of mixer inputs soon again.

Well I agree and personally I would go down the patchbay route but there may be a very good reason why DKDiveDude wants to have the 48 channels. We need more info, space available, budget vs needs etc.

Ok forgot about non-affordable 48 channel mixers, even though I never asked for affordable ones.

But how about 24 channel mixers with the MOST stereo mixing channels?

Found one that works for me; Roland M-480 Line Mixer as it has 24 stereo channels.

Yes, definitely wouldn't mind that sitting in my home studio..although I would probably have to sit outside in order to make room

I don't think that he means the Pro A/V mixer (he said he had space constraints), he probably means the vintage early 90's M480 rack mixer, which was also a nice mixer but given it's age it will be hard to find flawless unit.

Yes your probably right there Tux. Shame. The older one looks like it would do the job but like you said, age would probably be an issue now.

No I am talking about the old Roland Line Mixer with the same model name, 6U rach height.

And there is also the Samson PL2404 Rack Mixer 24-Channel Stereo.
