BTW, the unit on top of the Montage is a nifty little midi router box, Sipario. touch screen and all! nice stuff. I wish it had 8 midi ports instead of 4!

Nice video :) Montage has a lot of depth and longevity to it. It's one of those keyboards that you grow into over time.

Interested in that Sipario midi router. Not seen it before. If I read right this would be also idea for keyboards that do not have din type midi in/out/thru. Normally with usb only keyboards if you want to control other midi gear your have to do it through your DAW but...correct me if I am wrong, this box allows you to connect out via usb and then through the midi din sockets to your other gear?

Is the 4 MIDI ports a bit of a misnomer? It looks like it is two ports of IN/OUT Pairs? I.e. There are four connectors 2 INs and 2 OUTS

Potentially useful if you do not want a computer on stage, but shortly the heart of my rig will be a hidden computer with Cantabile acting as a live VST host and VERY versatile MIDI router.

This little unit is actually pretty amazing, it can route anything to anything, you have hundreds of programs to choose from, you can set your zones (!) per program, that means, you set program 1 to control synth A in the lower octaves, and synth B in the higher octaves. switch to a different program to have different zones. this make every keyboard a good master keyboard.
It can map any parameter to any parameter. say you play a part, you layer two sounds, but you want only one of them to be affected by the pitch wheel. you can set the program to send pitch messages only to one output, same goes to all parameters.
now lets say that you want your pitch wheel to act normally on the first midi channel, but on the second one you want to map pitch to cutoff CC - you can do it, easily!
and yes, you can connect any USB controller and it will behave normally.
You can literally control everything. program changes, midi CC messages, multi zone, midi filter, everything.
The control is also very quick, you have the touch screen which is very sturdy and fast, you have the rotary knob and you have a big button. I think its great for live use, albeit I didn't dive too much into it.

Personally I am a little underwhelmed by it at price they are selling it at. It does nothing that I cannot do in Cantabile, and Cantabile will do a whole load of things that this unit never will (true Cantabile needs to run on a computer as an extra cost factor, but I have that). In fact even without Cantabile in my rig, it does nothing that my FC300 MIDI foot controller can't do (not withstanding extra ports), and the thing is, who has their hands free when playing to faff about with a unit like that? That's what your feet are for.

So not for me and how I gig, but could be good for others :)

I agree with your notion Derek. It's a bit on the expansive side, but its very good for what it does.
There are many ways to do a live setup, and I bet yours is great.
I can see though where something like this would be really useful. if you have the time, check out this review vid.
If this had 2x or 4x the midi ports I'd definitely get it even for studio use - which is my main usage...

Hi, as I said it is not for me, as I usually have both hands on the keyboards, so I use an FC300 foot controller (with extra pedals) for modulation, Leslie speed switching, etc, and patch selection, including holding onto chords using techniques like Kronos Smooth Sound Transition (and now potentially the Montage equivalent) to effect patch switches without losing sound (which requires hands!)

I will be building a new rig over the next few weeks prior to getting back out live again before the year is out. Once complete, I'll share what I have done.
