D-50/NORD sounds on Montage possible?

Unread post by Chummy » Sat Dec 15, 2018 11:12 pm

Hi guys, just a couple of questions please

1) as in the title, is it somehow possible to be able to load Nord sounds (mainly interested in some of the pianos/EPs and Organs)
and also the D-50 factory presets/common user sounds? (a synth I never owned but love so much). If so how can one do that?
Also where can I find user sounds of other stuff especially VP-330? maybe other iconic stuff like JUNO 6?

2) Also I've always wondered, whether it's possible to tune the keyboard into micro 1/4 tones in specific keys , like a KORG PA-700 does?
(as in some Arab Maqamat). As I was playing with an Arab friend he brought his PA-700 and showed me its special buttons which set a desired note in a scale 1/4 tone flat wards. I wonder whether this is possible with the Montage 8 maybe by diving through some tedious menus? ...I kept the guidance book but don't feel like reading, the sheer size discourages me :(

1) No, you cannot load those sounds in the Montage. Sorry. You can by now load sounds from the Motif XF, the MOXF, and the DX7. But no sounds from other manufacturers. You could convert samples to the Montage using 3rd party software but that's not possible for the Nords or the D-50.

2) In the Part Common Page go to the Pitch / Filter tab. There you can select different Micro Tunings. There are several 1/4 tunings and some named Arabic. Not sure if any of those is what you need. If not, you can also create your own Micro Tunings from the same screen...

EDIT: Should you still have those instruments you could use the Sample Robot software which is free with the Montage and MODX for now to automatically sample the sounds you want and then load them in the Montage. I have done that with a couple of sounds from my Roland Integra. Those came over flawlessly. But this of course depends on the type of sound and also the amount of sample memory you can spare for that...

I haven't seen any libraries for Nord sounds; however I did see a library for the D50. Can't remember where I found it off hand, but it was likely via google searches or possibly one of the forums/sites that sell libraries.

If you can borrow a D-50, you could use 'SampleRobot for Montage' to get some of the sounds in a Montage format. Not sure how well it works yet though.

The best way to get the D50 sounds at the moment is to add a Roland D-05 module. You'll get all the stock sounds, and all the original editing functionality, and the sounds can behave more organically than static samples, i.e. in terms of how they can evolve over time.

Sampling a Nord organ sound into a Montage would be pretty futile. A lot of what makes the organ sound what it is is the leslie sim (rotary and drive) and the way you can dynamically alter the sound (rotary speed switching, drive that increases with increased volume, drawbar manipulation), none of which comes over in a sample.

Sampling a Nord Piano could come close, though still would lose subtleties like dynamic string resonances.

Or go for Roland Cloud and get a whole bunch of their classic keyboards in modelled form.

I agree with sampling an organ. Again, modelling is the way to go with something like VBII and the IK Leslie Sim
