Yamaha LS-TA Action Too High?

The TransAcoustic guitar is an instrument that uses a built in transducer and on-board processing to produce the same incredible sound found in a great sounding room without a need for external amps or effects.

Yamaha LS-TA Action Too High?

Unread post by Shortfinger »

ym_transacoustic.png
My LS-TA is a week old and came Fedex from a dealer one state away and a five hour drive.

It’s brand new, and while a beautiful instrument, it’s action is too high.

I’m going to take it to a luthier to see what can be done, but I’m thinking a combination of less neck relief, and less height at both nut and saddle is needed.

Has anyone else experienced this? Can we expect to see a shim under the saddle?

First up, welcome to yamahamusicians.com :)

How high is the action? Measured at the first fret it should be around 2.5mm and at the 12th approx 4-5mm

I wouldn't do anything with the neck right now. It should not need adjusting. Also you should let the guitar settle a bit. Temp fluctuations play a part in this and of course there is the "getting used to the guitar" part of the equation.

I have had guitars before that I initially thought were not going to be to my liking but after a couple of weeks playing it's amazing how you adjust and adapt :)

Mine came the same exact way (Kraft Music) Worst setup on a new guitar that I ever experienced - strings literally riding on top of the nut and honestly the neck angle looks a tad compromised and the thing is brand new. I'm going to send mine out to try and have straightened out.

Hi randy and welcome to the site.

I think if it were me and the guitar arrived as badly setup as you said I would be sending it back. If that has made it through "quality control" you have to then start wondering if they are properly checking the guitars at all. Each one should be individually set up before it leaves the production facility.

Any chance you could attach a photo of the setup? Take a pic from the side of the neck showing the height of the strings and how they are not seated in the nut correctly? I can then get on to Yamaha about it.

Hi Andreas, welcome to yamahamusicians.com :)

Thanks for sharing those photos. 2-3mm at the 12th fret is going to be about perfect. Just shows that not all these TransAcoustics have high action out of the box...assuming that is the action as it arrived and not something you have set up yourself?

Hi Saul, this action is original.
I did not touch anything. In my previous message I wrote that I pressed the 1st and the 14th but I was wrong to write. This measure was made at the 12th key without pressing any other nut. The guitar with original factory action is tuned on the whole handle.

I am Italian and to write I used a translator. I hope you understand.

By holding down the 1 and the 14 key, a sheet of paper is passed to the 8 key.

In my opinion the original guitar setup is perfect.

The guitar sounds very good

Tenendo premuto il 1 e il 14 tasto, al 8 tasto passa un foglio di carta.

A mio parere il setup della chitarra originale è perfetto.

La chitarra suona molto bene.

I understand just fine Andreas. Google Translate is doing a good job at the moment :)

Finally place a video of the passage of a sheet of paper at the 8th key. To do this I pressed the 1 and the 14 key. Forgive the quality of the video.
I have performed the verification myself.

Per finire posto un video del passaggio di un foglio di carta al 8 tasto. Per fare questo ho premuto il 1 e il 14 tasto. Perdonate la qualità del video.
Ho eseguito la verifica da solo.

Thanks for sharing the video. It gives a clearer idea of what the action looks like :)

Hi, a late welcome to the forum and the string section. :D

Thanks for posting pictures and video, looks to me that your guitar is well adjusted.
Unless YOU think the action is too high, keep it as it is and see if you want it changed later on.

Good call :D

Sometimes I scratch my head wondering why some folks want to mod their guitars before giving it a fair evaluation.

This LS TA I have owned for 8 months. I've never wanted to change it because it's just perfect.
