Installing LR Baggs Anthem in Yamaha TransAcoustic Guitar

Based on their L-series, the transacoustic guitar is a completely revolutionary new concept, creating an instrument that produces the same incredible sound found in a great sounding room.

Installing LR Baggs Anthem in Yamaha TransAcoustic Guitar

Unread post by GAViN617 » Wed Jun 06, 2018 8:33 pm

Hi everyone,

Found this forum on google and was wondering if any of you could maybe help. I've got an LS-TA that I'm thinking of installing an LR Baggs Anthem SL pickup system into. I love what the TransAcoustic can do acoustically but not really liking the sound when plugged in.

My idea is to isolate the actuator part of the system and upgrade the jack output to the Anthem, so I'll still have the acoustic effects, but it'll run on the Anthem when plugged into an amp.

I've taken some photos of the inside:

My initial thinking is to simply snip the required wires that output to the jack, thus allowing me to replace the jack with the Anthem system (to be done by a professional ofcourse), which will run on its own isolated power from a 9V battery. This will need figuring out which wires to snip.

Regarding the undersaddle pickup, since upgrading the saddle to camel bone - which has greatly improved acoustic tone - the sound from the actuator has increased in volume and feels like its clipping/zinging, even feeding back sometimes when played hard, when turned past 40% on either of the reverbs or chorus. I know the bone saddle is the cause of this since it isn't an issue with the stock saddle, but the tone improvement with it is substantial enough for me to want to keep it.

Since the undersaddle piezo from the Anthem is quite thin and flexible, I'm thinking it could be placed on top of the current piezo and double-act as a dampener, alleviating the issues I currently have with the TransAcoustic effects.

Let me know what you think! I'm no expert in guitar electronics, but it kinda makes sense in my head. Grateful for any input here!

Cheers,
Gavin

Excellent first post Gavin and a warm welcome to yamahamusicians.com and the string section :)

Is there no adjustment on the preamp board to take down the higher sensitivity now you have installed a bone saddle? Personally I hate that UREA material Yamaha keep using for the nut on nearly all their guitars so I would always replace it.

Yeah the step-up from the urea saddle to the bone was huge in every way! Yamaha should really consider making bone stock on their acoustics - they're doing themselves a disservice at the moment!

Looking through the soundhole I can't see any adjustment points of any kind on the preamp board, but I assume there must be some kind of adjustment possible, based on Yamaha's direct response to the feedback issue in this TransAcoustic owner's video.

In the meantime I'll just fit in the Anthem saddle and see if that helps at all. The guitar is still under warranty so I may give that a shot before I do anything that will void it.

I just posted on that video in response to Yamaha Music London asking people to send their guitars back for repair.

I would rather they told people what the actual problem is and let them decide if they want to fix it themselves...if that is indeed possible or send it back to the store.

Shouldn't be happening though. Yamaha are normally on point with quality control so I would imagine they will be all over this issue to make sure it doesn't keep happening.
