6 string as first bass??

Unread post by Michaeljones »

I've been playing acoustic and electric guitar for a while, but recently I've been hankering to try learning bass guitar. I have my eye on an Ibanez 6 string..

Am I insane for even considering jumping straight to a 6 string?? My sensible brain tells me I should obviously start with a regular 4 string then maybe once I've learned the basics try a 5 or 6er. But my heart really won't listen, and I think an emotional attachment to the instrument is important.

Any thoughts??

Hi,
Entirely up to you, 4 is classic, 5 has the advantage of extra low B so not much need for down tune and 6 has the high C for almost guitar territory solos :D
For first bass I'd go secondhand no matter how many strings, just in case it's not your 'glass of whisky' and there's usually good deals out there. Most players go with classic or 5ers from what I've seen.
As for learning, if you want play 6 strings then get 6 strings and get used to it from the start. It will be easier than 'adding a string' later on, well was uncomfortable for me when I tried to play 5er.
As someone said about bass playing: the occasional 5th is above the root, the rest of brain should be dedicated to looking nonchalant while trying desperately hard not to get the smoke in your eyes
Either way good luck.

Hi Michael,

I used to play Gtr a long time ago, but I'm keyboards these days . . .

4-string is traditional, but Uncle Jack (Bruce) would approve your choice of 6-string. ((i))

In 1966 when Cream burst onto the scene - he was playing 6-string . . . .

I would have thought that a "6" would feel familiar in your hands (as you play guitar anyway) so you know "where to go" with the extra strings . . . .

If you are looking to be more "melodic" in your playing (Rather than Root and Fifth (IYKWIM)) Then I would suggest that the "6" would be perfect . . .

Opinions will vary.

There's also the Baritone Guitar, as an option too . . . . . :confusion-confused:

Are you talking about the SRC6? which is a 30” scale EADGBE 6 string bass.
Or a BEADGC 34” or 35” scale 6 string bass?
they are very different instruments with very different string spacings and required technique.

Parametric is referring to a short scale 30” bass vi, which jack Bruce played (the fender bass vi). The src6 is a similar instrument and should be easier for you to translate to coming from guitar.
Extended range 6 string basses like the SR506, SR1306, BTB746, etc have wide string spacings and can be hard to navigate.

Yeah...I do a lot of that :/:

In this particular instance though, the OP was a spammer all be it one with a useful question, which is why I banned the poster but kept the post :)

I always recommend getting a Bootsy Colin's Star bass, no matter how many strings it has.

I wouldn't recomend. In the beginning, limiting yourself to the classic 4-string might be what you need. Then, when you move to 5 and 6 string, you will be able to develop your skills further.

But then again, if it inspires you, maybe you should listen to your heart.
