THR10II Clean Channel Noise

Unread post by sourdoughbiscuit » Mon Nov 25, 2019 11:14 pm

Hi all,

I bought a THR10II amp and love the tones I can get out of it, however the clean channel has some static/crackling noise that is present using the speakers and the headphone jack. I've tried 3 guitars, 2 cables, different outlets, and have exchanged the amp for another one and it still the same problem. Adjusting the volume or gain doesn't fix the noise. Here is a sample of the noise that happens mostly when hitting the E A D strings.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

edit: could not fix the noise on the clean channel. New sound clip here with frequencies reduced half way through

Hi sourdoughbiscuit, welcome to the forums :)

Ok so maybe it is my hearing but I couldn't detect any crackling or other noises on that demo. Also my wife, who has what I can only describe as the sort of hearing any covert government listening station would kill for, couldn't hear it either.

I have no doubt there is indeed an issue just I couldn't hear what it was. Perhaps others can?

On SOME of the "Hits", I can hear a sort of slapback echo - very quiet - after the main strike . . . is that what you mean?

Yes it's is very quiet on the recording and its heard while the notes are ringing not when they are struck. It almost sounds like a rattle. It was hard to record as the guitar is louder but it's very obvious in person and ruins the music.

If it is what I think it is..listening carefully it sounds like fret buzz. So just after the note is struck and the string is oscillating through the decay it is vibrating against the fret. Sorry if I am not explaining that well but it is the only thing I can hear that comes close....I think to what you are describing?

Having read your comment Saul - THAT seems a likely candidate . . .

I'm thinking - does it go away if you strum slightly LESS hard?

How to cure?

I'm NOT a guitar specialist - but, perhaps either raise the action (slightly) OR slightly heavier gauge strings?

Given that SDB has tried different cables, power outlets and even a replacement amp I would be thinking "Guitar"

Maybe try a different guitar and see if you get the same result?

Welcome to the forum and the string section. :D

What I hear is some small crackles repeating a few times after you've strummed the strings.

Since you say you've tried 3 different guitars and 2 cables, I guess that rules out the .... well. guitars and cables.
I Wonder how the amp was set.
Was the volume up high, and all effects turned off ?
The crackle can be produced if you strum hard and the amp is turned well up,
and the repetition may be from reverb or delay not turned totally off.
Also, for REALLY CLEAN sounds, you have to turn the "Expanded Stereo Mode" OFF.

I don't think your amp is at fault, after all, this is your second THR after you got the first one exchanged.

If no adjustments or perhaps a later firmware upgrade don't fix the problem,
you are better off trading this amp for an different product.
Owning equipment you don't feel happy about is a waste of time and money. :?

Best Regards
Peter

Still can't hear it. Stuck some really nice Yamaha headphones on and cranked the volume. All I am hearing is that same "vibrating string" noise I mentioned before. :confusion-confused:

I tried raising the action absurdly high and tuning the bass strings half a step up and with no fret buzz the noise remains. The noise happens at all amp volumes, with all effects off and with expanded stereo mode off. However the volume of the noise does decreases proportionally with the amp volume.

There is a threshold where if hit the strings very softly I don't hear anything which makes me think it's related to the pickups, but I don't have to strum hard at all to hear the crackle and my other guitars make the same noise. The weird thing is if I strum very hard it sounds crystal clear until the strings drop to a certain volume then the crackle kicks in.

I appreciate everyone's suggestions. I just purchased it from Sweetwater 2 weeks ago so I think I'll follow Buzzard's advice and return the product. I really like the amp and maybe it's just my equipment but I'll have to find another amp to go with.

Thanks everyone!

Looks like you have done everything possible there SDB.

From your description of what is happening it sounds like some sort of harmonic resonance, possibly affecting the speakers rather than the electronics.

I would definitely be looking at a different amp now. Possibly the Positive Grid Spark which is a great price and looks to be extremely versatile. Not wireless for playing the guitar although it does have bluetooth for streaming audio to the amp. You could of course always use something like the Line 6 G10S with it (Y)

Man that amp looks amazing and the price seems fantastic! I'll definitely keep this on my radar. I'd like to see a few more reviews before I pull the trigger.

Also, I tried updating the firmware but I have the same issue. The crackle never goes away both through the speakers and through headphones. Here is a new clip of the sound. I have attenuated some frequencies half way through the sound clip to try and make the sound clearer.

For some reason I can't post links. remove the space before "com" to hear the clip.
