Your favourite Yamaha SG

Unread post by Jimir68 » Tue May 02, 2017 9:53 pm

So lets start things off.

Mine has to be the SG1000S. The thinner lighter body makes it easier for an old man like me to wear round my neck unlike my SG2000S which weighs close to 11lbs. The control knobs fitted in the picture below have since been replaced with the correct black Yamaha style speed knobs. I managed to track some down along with a packet of Hens teeth.
Two guitars I would really like to try out is a SG700S and one of the new SG1820's sadly there isn't a single guitar shop in the whole of the island of Ireland that stocks the new Yamaha range of SG's.

Never owned an SG myself but if I were going to buy one it would probably be the SG1802 in black. I like that vintage vibe with cream coloured P90's and scratch plate. Not exactly cheap of course at around £2.5k here in the uk so won't be rushing out to buy one just yet but it is a very classy guitar :)

No doubt, my 1984 SG-3000S

Bought it in 2010 on ebay.uk , price was 1550£.
This is my gem of the collection, great condition apart from som belt buckle rash on the backside, and the gold plated hardware is worn.

Metallic black, and beautiful abalone inlays on the fretboard, head and inside the body bindings.
Weight is close to 4.9 kilos, must be all mahogany
I use Roto Nexus 009 strings.
It came with a beat up original hardcase in working condition.

Black always looks good on a SG. I'm seriously considering a SG1820 or SG1802 for my 50th next year. I have several guitars with Humbuckers and sold my only P90 loaded guitar a number of months ago so the SG1802 might be the guitar of choice.
I'm heading to London at the end of this month so I'm going to check out Yamaha's store in Soho where I hope to play both models. That should help me makeup my mind. Black if it's a 1802 torn between Tobacco Burst or Black if it's a 1820 but then again a Revstar my corrupt me.

Ha ha, yes a Revstar may well pull you away from the SG! They have a similar feel about them. The 520T would be my choice...a lot cheaper than an SG too :)

What about the RS502T? I like the sound of it's P90's and the floating bridge is a nice feature.

This one caught my eye

But it is a definite budget buster,
...and I am on a strict diet of vintage MIJ guitars.

I had an SG700 back in the 80s, it was a lovely guitar, though I was never that fond of the colour - brown.

I'd been interested in the current models, but they're just too pricey. I saw an ex-demo Gold top SG1802 for sale a couple of years ago, but I hesitated; it was still a lot of money and I want't sure I liked the idea of a gold top. It had sold when I looked a few days later. I came to regret that, and began to really like the gold top finish, (typical!). So when I spotted Guitarguitar selling off a small supply of all SG models in spring 2017, I grabbed a gold top straight away, (well, I did hesitate for a moment - the vintage white 1820 was very tempting, but the P90s were calling me...) Got it for £1450 - significantly less than the ex-demo guitar had been. :)

I absolutely fell in love with it as soon as I opened the case. The gold top is stunning 'in the flesh'. Despite the travelling from Japan to Europe, to the UK, then up & down England, and two years of storage, the set up was still perfectly to factory specs, and I'm pretty sure the action could come down if I wanted it to. Best made guitar I've ever owned, (and I've had a few USA models from Gibson, Fender and Guild). I particularly like the dark rosewood fret board, really sets off the gold finish:

I've a 1000S like the OP photo and a green 2000S,
I don't play either much these days, but the 1000 sounds better. They're both 100% original, but the 1000 does the 'Peter Green' thing in the middle. It's 100% standard, never been unsoldered and the wiring is 100% wired as it should be, BUT it nails it.
It's not thin and weedy like the 'sound-a-like guitars and pickup sets' where the just switch the wiring or magnet around, and if you alter the pickup heights, it disappears.
The 2000, which has the EXACT same spec pickups - I've measured them - doesn't do it.
I have my theories, on the 1000 and the Peter Green guitar.
