SY-77 as Masterkeyboard Problem

Unread post by mininuke » Wed Mar 13, 2019 9:22 am

Hi Folks,
i am using a restored SY-77 (lovely black oled display without any hum) as a masterkeyboard and stumbled over this problem:

my Piano Midi Expander is a GEM RP-X and this superp sounding unit freaks out if i use (mainly) the pitch wheel on the
SY-77. My main sequencer is a E-MU Command Station, so no way to filter anything in the midistream without additional harware.

It makes me mad, and i could swear it does happened suddenly from one day to the other. (had that setup quite a while running).

Are there any SY-77 experts that can help me? regarding the GEM RP-X, all i found out that Active Sensing Messages could freak the
modul out, described as a Midi data overflow. I have about ten external Midi Sound Modules connected and all of them are working flawless,
its just the GEM that makes problems. But it sound so beautyfull, i would hate to let it go, the company has gone out of buisness many years ago so there is no support from them any more. Maybe this is a GEM problem but i need to know what data from the Sy-77 cause the problem. (freakin out means, hanging notes, delayed notes, totally unusable response).
Thanks in advance.

Hi mininuke,

Do you have another board you could use to try the PB Wheel with?

If the GEM works with that - it would eliminate the GEM in this case . .

The SY77 is now an old an venerable board - and parts DO wear . . .

Could be that the PB wheel is dirty due to age - and a clean may help - or of course a replacement . .

As far as as checking messages goes, one of these may help: Crop up occasionally on ebay - (long time discontinued).

or failing that, try MidiOX (software) that may be more informative as to what messages are flying about . . .

+1 on checking with MIDIOX to see what is happening. Or Snoize MIDI Monitor if you have a MAC

thank you so much for helping me, i checked the midi data stream with an ipad app (midi wrench) but did not find anything unusal.
Pitchwheel sends pitchwheel data :) I think i give up, the GEM RP-x is a kind of an obscure item. The fact that all other midi recievers work as supposed led me to the conclusion that the GEM is buggy! But one question to the experts: does the Sy77 sends something like active sensing data?

The SY77 sends Active Sensing (FE) every 180ms and Timing Clock (F8) at 24PPQ.
Internal Timing Clock can be switched off in Song Mode by setting SYNC = MIDI.
If those messages aren’t required in your setup, then simply filter them out...
