Roland Jupiter 6 Service

Unread post by OOS » Fri Feb 22, 2019 9:37 pm

Hi all

Recently i got a Roland Jupiter 6 but even when i managed to load up the original patches - with the buttons blinking process - stil the synth doesnt sound as it should be. To be more specific all i get is a bunch of distorted sounds that dont really sound as they should. Many of the functions as ADSR and Filter, LFO and arpeggiator seem to work fine even with these garbled sounds but certainly the synth need a bit of service.
My first though is that some of the voice chips are not workin - it seems that i cant press more than one note at a time even when i am in "Poly" mode) but not sure about it since i dont have a proper sounding synth at the moment. M y other thought is somekind of corrupted memory chips (are there any in there? guess yes cause there are memory slots for presets and user saved sounds).

Is there a way to check voice chips (are these the CEM 3340 which i spotted ? ) Any ideas whould be great cause i dont want to get this beast into a service center at the moment and want to try and fix this myself. PCBs look clean and nice though, replaced the original battery which fortunatelly has no signs of corrosion with a CR 2032 using cables outside of the pcb, the original was a 3V battery so i guess did the right thing there. Any ideas ?

I attach here some pics of the internals

Here are some of the internals pics in case someone can spot anything weird, missing componets etc although this is not the case. Also though its a problematic power supply.

Bit difficult to know where to start with this. My first thoughts given that from what you have said everything seems to work apart from the distorted output is that you might want to start with the OP Amps and/or Capacitors. On a synth this old components will definitely change in value and often stop working altogether. I doubt it would be anything to do with the voice chips themselves. Perhaps someone else has some ideas here?

Hi Saul and thanks for the reply, can i measure with the multimeter the caps while they are onboard ? i dont have the service manual to know which caps are right, somebody was there before me, some rotary pots are changed with similar and i can see a cable "bridge on the adsr pcb which i am certain that is a repair - there is a repair stick in there too -
Really hope its not the voice chips. Can i test with a multimeter these too ? I can change the wavs on both osc s but they sound "garbled/distorted" too, although i can hear the change of among the saw/pulse etc.

I think you need the service manual so you know what the various values should be. If someone has been in there before it makes things a bit tricky as you don't know what the previous issues were? Was there no info from the seller?

Nope no infos sadly the synth was neglected but stored well, i need to find the service manual if anyone has it or has any ideas, i will also post a recording to clear up what i mean "garbled" sounds. Definitely its a keeper so need to find a way to repair it, hope its not something serious though.
