MIDI Channels w/ Motif Rack ES and PLG Cards

Unread post by puremusic » Mon Aug 12, 2019 11:53 am

I don't think there's a way to do this but I could be wrong.

I'd like to setup the two PLG cards in my Motif Rack ES to receive on MIDI Channels 1 and 2, the first on 1, the second on 2, and to ignore any other channel note, cc, etc. messages.

Possible? I couldn't find a menu option or info on it in the manual.

I thought PLG cards need to be set (with sysex) to a part-number which should be 'equal' to a midi channel (at least in a MU128).
I never understood this setup 100% clear but maybe you get it.

Hmm, I never had to work with the part #s before, let me look them up in the manual. This looks like it could be it! I will try it out later! :D

Hi,

I am not sure what mode you work in, but I always had my Motif Rack ES in Multi Mode and (whilst I would need to check how) you could set the MIDI channel for the PLG Parts just like any other part.

Is that enough to give you a hint, or would you like me to dig further into how I had it setup?

Hmm.. I thought I had this, but not yet.

I've never used the multi mode before, kept meaning to do something with it but never had occasion.

Let's see, in Multi mode looks like I can select voices but I'm not sure how to select PLG voices, they aren't coming up.

I went into Utlility to change the port #s for the PLG cards, figured I'd make them different since they're supposed to be the same as the MIDI channels, but when you change the port # for PLG 1, the port # for PLG 2 changes to the same thing, and vice versa. So if port # determines MIDI channel, I can't seem to set different port #/midi channels per card, at least in the Utility menu, maybe this can be done differently if I figure out Multi assignments.

Help is appreciated! :D

Hi,

Sorry, I forgot about this last night.

I just fired up my Motif Rack ES (not used it for a while) and it is all working as I expect.

In Voice Mode, then you can only play a single voice at a time, including the PLG Voices. You access the PLG card voices the same as any other voice bank by stepping through the BANK buttons until you get to them. In this way I can see my PLG150-AN and PLG-150-VL (and very good they still sound), and they play on the keyboard receive channel you have set in Utility Mode, just like any other voice.

In Multi Mode, if you go into Edit and Part Edit you can scroll to the PLG Parts (they appear as two extra parts) and set the MIDI channel they are receiving on

E.g. In multi mode the PART 1 select button on the front panel will step through Parts 1, 5, 9, 13 AND PLG Card 1 if fitted. the PART 2 select button on the front panel will step through Parts 2, 6, 10, 14 AND PLG Card 2 if fitted.

In Performance Mode, which I am not very familiar with as I never really used it, you can set one of the four parts to be a PLG part, but it is very fiddly! And of course in performance mode, the whole performance only plays when data on the global receive channel is received. The only thing you can do is split and layer parts; you cannot get performance parts playing on different MIDI channels.

So, if you wish to have the PLG Cards on different channels along with other Motif ES pats, then I highly recommend that you get familiar with MULTI mode, as you have complete flexibility on the parts and the channels they receive on. :)

Other than voice auditioning, my Motif Rack ES is always in Multi Mode.

HTH.

Thanks Derek this has gotten me a lot further along. I didn't even know to double press the MULTI button to turn it red and get to the part selection.

Now that I'm there, I can scroll along to see the last page which has the "Part | P1 | P2" menu.

VoiceNo. for P1 is 1 and P2 is -- . I figured out how to change P1, to either of the PLG card voice lists.

Now I just need to figure out how to setup the rest of it.

Happy to help, and of course you can do all sorts of splits ans layers. And to avoid too many button presses and forgetting to enter the right mode, I set my Motif Rack ES to boot into Multi Mode.
