What's this VL1-m in my rack worth?

Unread post by kbdPlyr » Sun Nov 19, 2017 2:27 am

Hi... new here (today),

So... modernizing my studio to a Laptop DAW with VSTs <-> interface type of set-up, and getting rid of things like the old KX-88 (replaced with moxF8), and other rack gear (replaced with VSTs).

Most of the rack gear's value is pretty easy to come up with by browsing & ebay.... so I don't think there will be much of a problem getting rid of the other stuff.... but I cant seem to find anyone selling a VL1-m.

It's been in my (home studio) rack since purchase (which was around the mid 90's), and I can't recall using it on anything (I don't play any wind instruments, or wind controllers).

Manuals:
-- Original (brown cover/white & gold writting):
- "VL1-m Getting Started",
- "VL1-m Feature Reference" ....
-- zip-lock plastic bag with:
- a green sheet in front "VL Version 2 voice lists & midi data"
- a dark green "VL Version 2 Owner's Manual"
- a white "VL1-m Voice List & Midi Data Format" manual
- a white sheet telling you where to put the ver 2 stickers
- a ~ 1 inch by 3 inch piece of paper with the two version 2 stickers on it.

I'm guessing the VL1-m came with version 2 installed when I bought it, but the stickers were not applied.

Additionally found 2 floppys: (hard clear plastic case/brown & gold paper/lettering): "Yamaha VL1-m ... Factory Set"..
and another (90s crackly shrink-wrap): "Yamaha ... VL1-m Version 2 Factory Set "

Also found a Yamaha BC-1 breath controller (which would go with the VL1-m were I to sell it).

I'll plug it in next week to see if it starts up ok, and plug a midi keyboard into it to see what comes out of the phones output.

In the meanwhile.... curious if anyone here knows what VL1-m (with above mentioned manuals/accessories) might be worth?

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the forums :)

Someone asked me about prices for a VL1-m a while back so I did some research and, at the time they were going for considerable money. I think the average price was around the £1500 mark but they have continued to increase in value since then. There is one on Ebay at the moment for £2,497.85 so that gives you some I idea. I'm not saying someone would pay that much for one but, you never know. The right day, the right buyer and your onto a winner :)

I think it just comes down to what someone is prepared to pay for it.

Hi

In general, I would say these are as rare as hen's teeth these days (hence why it is hard to find examples of them selling), so it should fetch a good price, assuming there is somebody out there looking for one. :)

Prepal is listing the average selling price as $1,578. Some people question the accuracy of PrePal, so be aware of that. In my experience, I tend to pay about 10% over what is listing (my recent EX5R purchase was about this delta on the prepal price). So I would not start below $2,000 as a sale. Given the rarity, I would probably start a little higher, around $2,500.

There is only one on eBay right now, the one Saul mentioned, which is about $3,300. Who knows if it will sell for that, but assuming you are not in a rush to sell, then you could always watch the sale and see what happens over the next few weeks. I recently put two EX5 synths on eBay and because they are in demand and priced in the right range they were gone within two weeks. If this VL1-m is still there in a few weeks then there is a chance it is priced to high (or all the people hunting for a VL1-m and willing to pay that price have not seen it ;) )

Given that Wind synthesis is a pretty specialist niche these days, it may be worth you joining the Yahoo wind synth group and seek their opinion. You might even find a buyer over there!

@ Saul and Derek... Thanks for the info.

Oddly, when I search ebay (from US... and ebay.co.uk).... I only see a VL1 (with 4 octave keyboard) in Amsterdam listed at about $ 4,500. Haven't seen any modules like mine.

I did send an email to Matt at Patchman Music (specializes in all things wind-synth... out of Ohio), but as yet no response. From things written on his site, he indicates that he doesn't want to be asked for Quotes, so perhaps that is why. Believe he also has something to do with the Yahoo forum you referred to.

Yea... not in any particular hurry... it's just that I have about 6 rack feet of gear (in a couple road cases) remaining, and its kind of in the way.... cluttering up the area. Probably only going to be keeping the Studio Electronics SE-1 ... a Korg 01R/W... and a Sony MU-R201. The rest of it can probably be (or already has) been replaced with VSTs.

Never done any ebay sales... and not something I can see myself doing. Not sure how either party (buyer or seller) could be sure they are not getting ripped-off. Perhaps I can find a vintage dealer here in L.A. that would be interested ... or an ebay broker (if such a thing exists) to move this stuff.

I'll check back here occasionally to see if anyone here is interested, and in the meanwhile, explore some of the above mentioned paths.

Thanks again to Saul and Derek for your help.

You will be fine with Ebay as long as you stay within their system i.e only accept payment from a verified paypal address and never send to anywhere but that verified address. Both Ebay and Paypal will then cover you against any losses. Of course they also take a massive chunk of your sale price into the bargain!

The other way is to do it by collection only. That is the buyer needs to come to you to pay and collect...NOT a courier arranged by the buyer. That is usually a scam.

I have been using Ebay almost since it first existed and never had a deal go sour yet.

Also you could advertise on reverb.com which of course is a dedicated musical instrument sales platform. Lots of dealers on there but that may not be a bad thing considering what your selling.

If you want to advertise your VL1-m on our site your more than welcome. You do need to provide pics and a price though so people will know what it is they are getting. Also your location although that only needs to be approximate. Everything that is posted on the forum and the front of the site normally appears in Google within hours so if anyone is out there looking for a VL1-m you may be in luck!

Hi, Yes Patchman moderate the Wind synth group. I'm a member as I have a WX5 and two forms of VL in my studio (EX5R and PLG150-VL) that I keep intending to do something with......

I agree with Saul on eBay. Follow the rules and you will be fine. I have never had a sale or purchase go wrong yet.....

This one just sold within the last 2 weeks on eBay from Switzerland at the Buy-Now price.
It was online for almost two weeks before someone stepped in and bought it.

Yamaha VL1-m tone generator ( 263287734549 )
emusic15 Feedback percentage of 100%
US $1,503.46
Buy It Now or Best offer

There is also a VL7 keyboard online for over a month on eBay for $1499.99 that hasn't sold.

Buyers for something like a VL1-m will be thin on the ground but they are out there so it's a matter of listing it and waiting.

The biggest issue is not the sale but the amount of money Ebay and Paypal will take from the final value fee. So for example the person who sold that VL1-m for $1,503.46 will have lost $204.35 in fees! Ebay of course will argue that your benefiting from having your item advertised to millions of people. But this is misleading because in truth your only advertising to the people who are actively searching for your item and even then only the ones that use Ebay. So reality is, your probably not putting it in front of any more people than if you stuck it on reverb.com...for FREE!

Still, with something so niche and rare it's a sellers market so I don't think it would take too long to sell and for a good price.

Yea.. I was doing some other googling on VL1-m, and found that an ebay seller called "rarehifiradio" out of Woodstock Virginia has possibly sold another one.

I say possibly, because I'm not familiar with eBay's wording... so anyhow... this particular ebay listing "Ended" on Nov 12 and the sale price was $3499.

Not sure if this means that it sold for this price, or seller decided not to sell it, or that someone walked into his/her shop, and made an offer that was accepted (?).

So far... I've seen VL1 & VL1-m going for a low of ~ $1500 ... and a high of ~ $4500. Quite a range, eh?

You can usually see the bidding history on an item even if it has ended but yeah, most likely he sold it "off" Ebay to avoid the fees, which as you can imagine would have been pretty ridiculous at $3499!

The price does vary but it's worth what someone is willing to pay for it. In my experience if you leave it out there long enough there is ALWAYS someone willing to pay your price or very close to it :) It's a bit like fishing. You have the right bait now you just need some time and patience and you WILL get a bite ;)

Hey Saul,

Sorry about the delayed response... but a week ago I paid to have someone start building me a fast laptop (i7 6core 32gig ram @ 4.7GHz), and install Win10, Sonar Platinum, Apollo xface, instruments, plugins.... etc.

Then on the 22nd, came to this forum to reply to you, and the cover page alerted me to Gibson Shutting down Cakewalk (Sonar)... so I had to contact the online store (Chris at ADK Pro Audio, Kentucky), and he was great about it, and after a couple days of research, I substituted Studio One 3 Pro to replace the original order of Cakewalk Sonar Plat. Also bought one of those PreSonus Faderport controllers, and Softube Console 1 (elsewhere).

Kind of sad, as I had been using Cakewalk since it was a DOS, midi only program in the '80s. Also a bit irritating that Gibson would do this to their Cakewalk user base (we got to hear about it in the media.... not from Gibson directly). Had also been thinking of getting a new Les Paul this weekend, but will research some other brand now.

Needed to read everyone's data to make sure my moXF8 could be made to xfer midi & audio via usb to this new pc/DAW combination (ie that someone had done it before)... that the Thunderbolt would talk to the new DAW software and Apollo.. and that the various controllers would all get along with the software & each other. The sales that most retailers have this time of year & the fact that someone was currently building this for me, made it important to deal with DAW software replacement quickly.

Regarding your (much appreciated) advice, I'll be patient about the sale of this rack gear... set it aside, and probably put it up for sale at a price that is a bit high... then just wait it out. I've got some time before the new version of my project studio is built & delivered, so I'm just going to move all the rack synths & efx into a closet, and forget about them for a bit until I get the new studio settled.

Thanks again for the advice and help with this.
