Korg 01 W Blank display

Unread post by OOS » Mon Sep 23, 2019 5:11 pm

Hi All

After a long time i get back to my favourite music forum with a question, i was offered to buy a Korg 01 that although looks mint has a major issue, while it powers on the LCd lights and remains blank. Is this a motherboard issue ? any ideas would be nice. On a dedicated 01 site i have read that if the screen dissapears this is due to bad caps on the MB. I would like to get that fixed and i am dont mind that much about the LCD backlight.

Hi.

Does it make a sound at all when you press a key? Any other sign of activity.

Could be bad PSU (and caps), failed display, loose connector. All sorts of things.....

Hi

Yes i get the "basic piano sound" that means that i need to restore factory presets which i cant do cause i can not see anything on the display (there is light on the screen really faint one but there is and no characters). Also all buttons seem to work cause lights of the buttons such as combi/single/sequencer play - stop etc. So the synth is alive but i cant see anything in the display.

Hi

Good news that other things are working, so unlikely to be a PSU issue

At that point I would start looking inside. If you have lost both the display AND the backlight, but everything else appears to be working, I would first be hopeful and start checking for loose connections on the display.

Hi Derek

Yes this is exactly my case all works apart from the characters on the display there is also a little dim light on the lcd but i dont mind about that since its another issue. Opened the synth up and i cant see any loose connections but i may need to open it up again for a more careful inspection. Also on a 01 dedicated page i have read that screen dissapearence is dut to faulty caps on the MB. Hope to find what the prob is since i want to keep the beast.

Taken from POLYNOMINAL page about the synth.

MAINTENANCE there are 3 common issues I had with 01RW: WARNING: IC location may be different on keyboard 01!

1-after some years the screen may disappear as well as sound generation. S some bad capacitors leak inside creating corrosion around tracks, some luck there is no custom KORG IC around, I had to replace these: C85, C29 and C30, C102, C103 and C130.
It seems that NOT all series suffer from this problem

2- display backlight: after many years the LCD fades out you have to replace the E-foil, quite easy to do requiring some basic soldering skills.

3- Fd drive may not work, try cleaning the heads with proper liquid solution.
