KORG have just released a new workstation called the i3. Some of you may be experiencing a sense of deja-vu here because of course KORG already had a workstation keyboard named 'i3' way back in 1993.

At the time it was quite different from any other workstation because it broke new ground in combining a synth with an arranger. And in doing so opened the floodgates to all the arranger keyboards we have seen since then.

Anyway, fast forward to 2020 and there is a completely new version of the i3.

The new i3 certainly looks bang up to date. Gone are the chunky lines of the 1993 version. The new i3 looks very sleek indeed and even better in the Silver colour option...well for me anyway (Y)

KORG doesn't say too much about the sound engine inside the i3 other than "Stereo PCM sound generator" so I am assuming nothing particularly modern in that department.

Polyphony is also a bit low at 64. Surely in 2020, the minimum should be 128. But then perhaps it just doesn't need it?

There is something very odd though about an arranger keyboard that has no built-in speakers. There is clearly room for them in that casing so who exactly are KORG pitching the i3 at?

The fact that the i3 can run on batteries for up to 8 hrs makes the lack of built-in speakers even odder.

I also think KORG have done themselves no favors with this demo video. Reminds me of some of the cringe-inducing videos that Yamaha have been putting out over the last year or two. Come on, folks. You are in the music business! Surely you can do better than this?

The price in the UK is £499 and it should be available from March.
