The Yamaha XS 650 Special

Unread post by Saul » Sun May 06, 2018 4:51 pm

Now this was an interesting bike. It was Yamaha's take on the Triumph Bonneville 650 and although I had always wanted a "bonnie" I was not that enamoured by the way bits would fall off through vibration and you had to lug a great big tool bag with you to put it all back together again...that plus the constant oil dripping from the crankcase!

Yamaha took a great idea and made it smoother, faster, easier to maintain and leak free. Perhaps it didn't quite have the same kudos as the Bonnie but it was still a great bike :)

That takes me back ........ the Hamamatsu Bonneville.

A friend of mine had two of them, and I have spent some hours turning spanners on it since he was useless.

Great Bikes though giving a wonderful sound too.

Peter

Yea I did a LOT of miles on the old XS650. It rarely needed much attention and was a joy to ride. Also as a dispatch rider the narrow dimensions definitely helped when flicking through the London traffic ;)
