Are AfterTouch mag DX7 voices compatible with DX7II?

Unread post by Bricago » Thu Nov 07, 2019 5:11 am

Hello,

I'm interested in programming the DX7 voices from the archived AfterTouch magazine in my DX7II. One parameter I'm having a hard time locating is "Frequency." In the magazine diagram showing all the parameters, it appears in the top left corner for each operator. Two other parameters, Detune and AMS are on the same row. For example, on p. 5 of the Jan. '87 issue, the values with their corresponding operators are: Op1: 3.0, Op2: 1.0, Op3: 1.0, Op4: 1.0, Op5: 5.0, Op6: 3.0.

I've searched everywhere to no avail. Any ideas?

Hi. The DX7II is backwards compatible with the DX7, to the point where it accepts DX7 SYSEX data messages and specific DX7II data is stored in its own message.

I actually think I've seen DX7 banks of these presets floating around the web. If I'm not mistaken they can be found here:

Thank you, Derek and Macke, for the replies. Derek, I see what you mean about the backwards compatibility, but I'd still like to know if and where the "Frequency" parameter is on the DX7II.

Macke, thank you for the link to the compiled voices. Since someone else has already done the data entry grunt work, I'll work on downloading the voices as sysex files.

You are welcome. That site contain thousands of banks but I remembered that the aftertouch presets bank was easy accessible.

Assuming you mean oscillator frequency, then, according to the DX7II manual, it is under button 8 (oscillator)

On a DX7II programming chart then what you see in the manual under button 8 are the Mode, Course-Fine, and Detune parameters.

Derek, that's it! Thank you. I just MIDI dumped the sysex file of user-created AfterTouch voices from Bobby Blue's page and noticed that the frequency values correspond to the Coarse/Fine parameter under button 8: OSC. (specifically the "fine" parameter.) I appreciate your help with this.

I'd like to post a basic guide for anyone new to the DX7II who might want to try programming the voices from the Yamaha AfterTouch magazine, like I did. The NY School of Synthesis DX7II Video Manual with Dean Friedman is an excellent intro. course to navigating the system. I thought that a good first step to beginning programming would be to follow in the footsteps of some successful voice creations, as published in AfterTouch. Any corrections are welcome.

DX7II Programming Procedure for AfterTouch Voices

The order shown follows the parameter boxes for the voice diagrams. Start at the bottom row of the box and move up. You could also re-order the steps by button number (i.e. parameter), but that will have you skipping from box to box, and you might miss one of them. Button numbers are in parentheses.

Hey- if you're new to the DX7ii I recommend heading to the yates archive and reading the very valuable "The Complete DX7ii" which is quite long but very accessible. There are also all issues of AFTERTOUCH and if memory serves, the DX7ii patches listed are *not* in the Bobby Blues dump. I am a big fan of the AT patches, they're great training tools for learning the synth and vary from useably interesting to quirky and experimental. Best of luck!
