WHEN REPLACING YOUR RUBBER BELT . . . .

Unread post by parametric » Tue Feb 12, 2019 3:23 pm

. . . . . This is something else to check while you have your drive open . . . .

These drives, the belt-driven ones, are common to many of the older boards . . .

When you insert a disk in these drive and it "snaps DOWN" - this presses a microswitch - telling the drive a disk is present.

Obviously - if this switch goes faulty, and doesn't report a disk present - nothing more will happen -

no matter how good the belt is . .

This link shows how to fix this: jan.bonisch.com/page.php?lng=en&pg=5

Very nicely explained with pictures . . . .

It's for the W5/7 - but as I've said - the Drive is common to many boards - perhaps yours?

What kind of error would be thrown up if this was an issue?
I guess something like 'no disk' or 'insert disk'...

As a follow up question:
When you insert a disk in these drive and it "snaps DOWN" - this presses a microswitch - telling the drive a disk is present.
If the switch is bad, would you still get a "disk not ready" message on the display?

When the microswitch is pressed (by the disk) it either makes (or breaks) contact.

Unless this message is received by the drive - the operation stops right there - and the error message displayed.

So - if the switch is faulty and NOT making/breaking contact - then the drive will not receive that message,

and so will display the error.

I believe that a slack/broken belt will produce the same message. . . . .
