The facsimiles are in modelled synths like the Kronos or any VSTi you care to pick to match your need.
Want a monster analog synth? UH-E DIVA
Want a Hammond Organ? VB3
Want a good resource light acoustic/electirc piano emulation? Pianoteq (endorsed by Steinway, it's that good)
Want a Mellotron clone? MTRON PRO
Etc.
[FIRST POST, YAY!}

It occurs to me that all of these can be accomplished with fairly inexpensive iOS instruments on an iPhone or iPad ...
  • Monster analog synth: Korg iMono/Poly, Korg Module or Gadget, Propellerheads Thor. IK Multimedia Syntronik ...
  • Hammond Organ: Korg Module or Gadget, Galileo ...
  • Resource light acoustic/electric piano: Korg Gadget
  • Mellotron: Korg Gadget
(Obviously not a complete or comprehensive listing)

Hello and welcome. Yes. IOS instruments are getting very good as well. The new Moog Mini sounds awesome and for a bargain price compared to the cost of a new one. I tend to use iOS for messing about when stuck in hotels. Some ideas come out of that. I am more PC based in my live rig because there is no (to my knowledge) equivalent of Top Ten Software Cantabile, and also I want to be able to use my studio VSTis used to create the songs in the first place in a live context.

But you are right; there are a lot of fine synths on the iOS platform.

Cantabile is excellent. That or Gig Performer would be my present top choices in that category. My current gripes about iOS applications is the lack of good support for external MIDI instruments in all of the available sequencers. I'm still seeking the ideal hardware/software hybrid rig.

More ON TOPIC: The MODX7 looks like it will fill some much needed requirement in my present setup.

What would be great in iOS is wireless MIDI. That would be a bit of a game changer. Plug a dongle into your midi keyboard and away you go!

I can see the MODX7 being very popular and my guess is it will outsell the MODX6 by quite some margin. I can definitely see the MODX8 doing well also.

Now that is something I never knew about :)

I was though thinking more along the lines of this:

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... me-widi-x8

You plug that into your keyboard and then you can use the keyboard to play and control your iOS synths.

Apparently they are no longer available but I have one here and it works extremely well although of course no way to use it with an iOS device at the moment.

That looks Apple (macOS) specific, so I'll have to try it sometime on my MacBook Air.

As for my Windows 10 desktop computer, I installed a thing called rtpMIDI (https://www.tobias-erichsen.de/software/rtpmidi.html), but I've yet to actually give it a spin-- mostly because I keep my keyboards connected to my computer via USB all the time anyway.

Looks like interesting software that guy creates. I saw mention of Windows XP! So he's been at it some time :)

Would be great though if a manufacturer included wireless midi within a keyboard or perhaps bluetooth. Some way of just connecting to your desktop, laptop or other keyboard/midi device without cables and with the minimum of fuss. I am sure it is possible. Perhaps one of those things they are all keeping back as a feature they can add further down the line?

Not sure if you are referring to my link to Sound On Sound, but I suspect it is using Apple Bonjour services which you can also install on Windows. I use it with the Steinberg Cubase Remote control app on my iPAD.

I'll have to give iOS synth Apps to PC a go some time, but insanely busy in work right now (keyboards have not been on for several nights now! :(

rtpMIDI is amazing. I used it in Welsh Floyd to link the backing track laptop to the video playback laptop via Ethernet MIDI to avoid the need for more MIDI interfaces. It worked like a dream, although for some reason, connecting the laptops back to back (single network cable) didn't always work. But it was rock solid with a small Netgear Switch.

You need to use a "crossover cable" if you connect two laptops directly to each other. Most modern network cards can autonegotiate standard-vs.crossover cables ... but it's still a bit flaky in many cases.

No, it was even flaky with a crossover cable (I tried both standard and crossover cables). Some network interfaces seem to only to be able to auto negotiate with a switch.

Apparently the French have better and faster information. I've often noticed that. Why is that?
