Nice...I think I have that one too...hahaha, I think I have bought most of the chart reading apps! I stick with Unrealbook as it is so straigthforward, not a lot of bells and whistles.

But as the MODX has the Motif XF sounds, it would be a great rompler for MIDI playback! Hence I might look at a different book to UB.

Actually no. What I am seeing is that it will keep the auditions. I guess what happens is that it uses the order of songs to determine the audition number. Thus you get the same audition number / song mapping again. Probably until you delete one of the songs in the middle. I have added songs over time but the auditions are still matching.
So is it the case that, if you never delete any songs, then you never have to worry? ...Regardless of how many performances you have or what order you arrange your performances in, remove them, or reorder them over time..!?
If so, that would definitely work!

If stopping the Audition (& maybe adding some extra time to it at the end as you suggested) is the only real drawback, then that works.

There are some limitations, though: I found that the loop mode does not work so you have to unroll any loop and make it long enough for all cases.
Regarding loops, are you referring to arpeggios that you've saved?

That's my understanding and my experience so far. That cannot be a guarantee, though.

And no loops. Other drawbacks might be there, but if there are I did not find them, yet.

No. I mean you can program one loop in the performance recorder. So once it reaches the looped part of the song it will repeat that part of the song until you press the stop button. I found that the loop is simply ignored if you save a song as an audition.

The performance stores the Kbd Ctrl setting, so I guess if you switch Kbd Ctrl off for parts they will not be triggered by the keyboard but only by the sequencer. And this state is stored with the performance. In any case, if you prepare the songs as MIDI files, you could use parts 9-16 which are not triggered by the keyboard anyway and leave parts 1-8 for live playing.

If I wanted to layer the most massive 16 part strings on the MODX or Montage, and it play them live, are you saying that only the parts 1-8 would play and there is not way to get parts 9-16 to play on the keyboard as well? Or is that just the rule while a song or audition is playing?

Correct.

There are some instruments that let you split/layer 16 parts... I think all the Korg workstations can do that (Krome, Kross, Kronos), and I think the Roland Juno DS and FA models can do it, and the Kurzweil Forte 8/7 and PC3 series.

Well, in principle with some additional MIDI filter / processor you can play all 16 parts if you feed the output of the MODX through the processor and into the MODX again. You would have to use multi mode on the MODX and shift the channels by 8 using the MIDI processor, (e.g. channel 1 to 9, channel 2 to 10, ...). I have done this in the past as an experiment. Works just fine, but I cannot see a real need for that: Note that each part has 8 elements. For things like sawtooth based synth strings you probably would not need splits. So you could use all 8 elements for layers. So you could layer all 8 elements of each part and all 8 parts over each. You would get 64 sawtooth voices on each key. And remember, each of them comes with their own envelope, filter, fine tune... Also note that the MODX has super string samples which alone are samples of detuned and layered strings... But of course you only have 2 voice polyphony left!

Regarding the additional MIDI filter / processor, is that a something configured inside the keyboard, or is that an external device?

That's extra hardware. For example MIDI Solutions Event Processor should be able to do it.

Of course, should the MODX ever get the flexible MIDI input channel selection, then it would work without extra hardware.

Right, you could loopback the MIDI from the Out to the In through an external processor (I'd probably go with an iOS app) to trigger all 16 parts. Rather than shifting the channels by 8, it might be simpler to turn Local Off, and have the processor take one channel in, echo on 16 channels out (or whatever combination you needed).

What iPad application would you recommend for that?

I haven't done it, but it looks like MIDI Breakout Box should work. MIDIflow is probably another one.

Does the Montage have the 'flexible MIDI input channel selection' or is this on the wishlist for both Montage & MODX?

Montage and MODX are identical in this respect.
