Hi Greg, welcome to the forums :)

As you no doubt discovered reading this thread and others on the forum, nothing is ever perfect and there are certainly some things we would all like to see Yamaha implement on future updates. I agree absolutely that the "assign" function should be very simple as you outlined. Likewise an undo function would help. At the moment you have to click out of what you are doing and then go back in again which means you lose any other changes you made.

Yamaha keyboards always entail a bit of a learning curve and the MODX is no different except that the learning curve is less steep than previous keyboards and of course the end result is always worth the effort :)

Thanks Saul. Just a wish list of mine, not a gripe list :-) I just ordered mine today and can’t wait for it to arrive.

Oh, and add me to the camp that wants the different parts to have assignable midi receive channels.

I haven't bought anything yet, so everything is still on the table for me. The Kronos and even Krome are still options, but the Montage and MODX are options as well, and I am weighing them carefully...
Good luck with your choice, to me the comparison between MODX and Kronos is not really fair. The Kronos is twice the price of the MODX. It's a great synth, but it's also a full workstation, whilst you should really see the MODX as a sound/synth machine.

Having said that, the difference between MODX and Montage is suprisingly minimal. MODX is a LOT of value for your money.

I bought my MODX8 because I needed something light weight to carry to gigs. I suppose I can always get a Kronos 61 at some stage once the price drops, but my advice would be to first look at what your personal requirements are first

I have actually ruled out the MODX since I last posted. I realize the main deal breakers or scale tippers for me are three things:
- Need to have the most awesome pianos available, especially a C7 Grand (the Synthogy Ivory C7 would be my preference by far!)
- Need enough storage on the new Workstation/Synth for the variety of pianos, etc. that I want to load.
- Need to have a Balanced Keybed to trigger the piano samples evenly, especially in the mid/lower part of the keyboard, something the MODX8 GHS keybed does not do (this one could be nullified in a future software/firmware release if they implemented some kind of 'Velocity Scaling')

Regarding having enough storage & pianos I really want:
I did the math and between installing the Bosendorfer, installing the Wojtek Olszak Montage Pack, possibly the K-Sounds Piano 2 Kawai EX Concert Grand – Motif XF/MOXF, having a good C7 Grand (possibly the Epic Grand, the Genos C7 if it becomes available, or the *Synthogy C7 if it becomes available), and several other libraries that are available or that I am looking/may become available in the future...the MODX only has 1 GB of User memory, which is not enough! So it is now down to the Montage8 and the Kronos 88 key !!

It is a tough decision because there are so many things I like about the Montage. But the Kronos has something like 60 or 80GB of storage, and I know I can get the Synthogy Ivory C7 Grand installed on that workstation... There are some down sides to the Kronos as well, and there is still hope that I might be able to get the right C7 on the Montage, plus I am saving up for this new Workstation/Synth, so I have some time before I can even purchase.

The one thing that WOULD definitely tip the scales to the Montage for me right now, would be if numerous people emailed Synthogy, expressing interest in having a Montage version of their C7 Grand (their email is support@synthogy.com so please email them and spread the word if you like their C7 piano for the MODX/Montage-I'll post some demos below) &/or if numerous people went on Yamaha Ideascale at https://yamahasynth.ideascale.com/a/home , registered a new account and 'Up Voted' my Idea via the link below, and Synthogy/Yamaha made it available as a library for the Montage/MODX:

I totally get it. In my experience though it's not always the sample size of a piano which determines how well it sounds on stage particulary in a band. Best piano I ever used was the Steinberg The Grand, but I don't want to bring laptops to a gig anymore. I don't love the MODX piano's, even the Bosendorfer sounds a bit cheap. I like the CFX Grand 2 best from the MODX expanded library. But I probably still prefer my old S90 Piano's (especially the one in the GM bank weirdly enough). I'l probably do some shopping or sampling myself, looking at your requirements it's more then the sound, the MODX keyboarddeck certainly is no stage piano quality. But for me it's weight vs quality.

By the way the assign function does work by just touching the control you want to assign something to. Check this video and look at the section around 25.12

It would be really useful if the SCENE function also allowed you to turn MIDI zones on and off per scene. This would make the scene function much more useful in a live situation.

Example: In some performances, I use my MODX to be the second manual for my Hammond XK-3c. I can turn the zone off for the performance, but it has to stay on (or off) for all scenes. I would like to be able to switch scenes within a performance and have the ability to "mute" the midi output, just like I can mute and unmute the parts within the performance in different scenes.

Another suggestion would be to have an additional (short) manual for people upgrading from a different Motif series instrument. I have owned a Motif8, MotifES6 and MOXF6 and it has taken me some time to wrap my head around the new/different way that the Montage series handles parts/voices, performances, master mode, etc. After figuring it out, I really like it - but there was a lot of head scratching and "ah-ha" moments.

Just go to Scene MIXING 2 - it allows you to mute parts per scene.

Thanks Saul. Yes, I see now the manual says:

“While the parameter assignable to controllers is selected on the display, press this button and operate the desired controller for assignment. The controller setting display appears.”

The thing with that is that you have to already be on an edit screen with a controllable parameter selected for the button to work. My suggestion would be that when in the performance home screen, pressing this button would bring up the edit screen or control assign screen, or some screen other than just not doing anything. It just seemed unintuitive when I first tried the keyboard out that pressing the control assign button when in performance mode did nothing at all.

Yeah it's that good old 'Yamaha' way of doing things ;) Yamaha engineers have a very different mind-set than most and the functions are usually there but not where most users would expect to find them :confusion-confused:

Are the Assign and octave/transpose button settings not stored with a performance?

Both very useful to save with a preset..

Transpose or octave shift could be a great feature next to volume in live sets as well..

No, they are not. And I agree about the transpose or octave shift.

No they are not saved and as others have mentioned it IS a bit of a pain and something that should definitely be sorted out. I would not expect the settings to just default to save when you change them but we should be able to press the store button and get the option.

Hi Guys,

Just a newbie in piano learning and a new owner of MODX8....

I want to give you some suggestions that i think would be useful for most people...

1) When someone browses a preset or other bank, a remaining pages and current/total number of preset chosen indications (for ex. Page1/12, Preset 5/450) could prove useful
2) Is there way for me to continue from the exact same place i was before switching off the instrument (same sound chosen etc)? something like resume....
3) When browsing a preset or other bank, i would like to isolate and filter only the favorites of it.....just a yellow star does not help too much, unless there is a way that i m unaware of....
4) Screen brightness setting would be nice.

And a question?
Why in 2018 Yamaha still uses a resistive kind of screen and not a capacitive one. Lots of times i struggle to choose the correct option from the menus....it is not very accurate and needs pressure (the screen).

Please implement Sympathetic String Resonance on the Montage & MODX pianos using the Yamaha VRM (Virtual Resonance Modeling) technology that is already used on other Yamaha digital pianos.

The Korg Kronos already has this feature on its pianos, making them feel and sound more realistic. This could be done in a software change without any hardware changes.

This video perfectly & clearly demonstrates how the Montage does not/can not do Sympathetic String Resonance, where as the Korg Kronos can/does have this feature. Watch and listen between 0:26 - 0:38

*If anyone would like to see this enhancement, please post your support for it under this topic, as well as 'Up Vote' my idea on IdeaScale via the link below: ;)
