I thought it might be a good idea to have a sticky on the MODX forum where people can put there suggestions for future software/hardware updates.

If we can keep this particular thread to things you would like to see Yamaha implement in future firmware updates and also in the next iteration of the hardware it would help a lot. This is not a "complaints" thread!

I will kick it off with my two suggestions.

1) Would like to have the port identifications silk screened in white on the top facing back edge of the keyboard. Would save having to keep leaning over to check which port is which.

2) Put a power on/off button on the top of the keyboard rather than at the back or make the one on the back more prominent so it is easy to locate with your hand when standing at the front of the keyboard.

So there you go, my only two small suggestion for a future version of the MODX. :D

Apart from not owning a MODX myself this would make so much sense! Even my SY99 has this feature - so you can tell from looking at the front facing which connectors/jacks are located where on the back...

Both Excellent suggestions, Saul - and further confirmation of the good sense in talking to PLAYERS when at the design stage.

The Fusion has these markings both on the top AND on the back. (They ARE there, just difficult to see at this size)

The Power switch - a sizable rocker-type can be seen far right - (when facing the keys)

Yes thats the sort of thing I was thinking of Chris. Doesn't have to be anything too bright or even that noticeable, just a subtle indication of where the ports are. I think though the reason the indicators are on the back of the MODX is because of the distance between the top of the board and the location of the ports. It is quite a gap so maybe they thought having the printing on the top would not have actually helped that much...if you see what I mean?

Probably a more difficult situation with the MODX8 as you can see in the photo below?

Have the last selected Performance category stay in memory. It is a pita that each time you select a User Performance then go back out to edit it or whatever then go back to the catgory to find it has defaulted back to the ALL setting.

How about an update to the USB Host interface, so that it is fully USB MIDI class-compliant?...then MIDI controllers with a class-compliant USB device interface can be directly connected...it seems like the traditional 5-pin MIDI interface is not being implemented on newer controllers...

And to be able to jump straight to EDIT from the Category search screen, isntead of having to first jump back to the Performance min screen, then EDIT.

Hopefully these will apply to the Montage as well....
#1 Remove the restriction on MIDI so that you can set a MIDI channel for a part that will also act as the RX Channel as well as the TX channel
#2 Ability to select specific Live Set via MIDI (not just the Live Set Page and Live Set Slot).

Another MIDI Mode is needed whereby you can have a performance send/receive MIDI on a single channel for multiple mixer "slots" or "parts" or whatever Yamaha calls them.

So ... instead of a performance sending/receiving multiple channels ... you just have the one channel control part 1-thru-4, another channel control 5 & 6, etc.

This would really help cut down on confusion when in use with external sequencers.

Hi all,

Here are two more wishes (minor, but perhaps easily implemented by Yamaha?):

1. On the Performance Category Search page, when you open up the Bank/Favorite list and select a bank you have to then close the list by touching the X in the upper right corner. I would prefer that the list automatically close after you select your Bank. Same thing applies for the Attribute list. If you accidentally selected the wrong Bank or Attribute it is no big deal to reopen the list. 99% of the time you do select the Bank or Attribute you wanted, so why not have the list then close itself?

2. On that same page, if you select a Category (e.g. Strings) and then select an Attribute or Bank, the selected Category is deselected. Why? If I'm looking for a string sound and then decide I want only Single Performances, shouldn't Strings stay selected? My opinion: yes!

These are things that would slightly improve the workflow, IMO.

A few from me in these early days of getting to know the instrument:

1) Persistent sustain when switching performance if the pedal is already depressed (it currently cuts out)
2) A way to elegantly stop rhythm patterns, perhaps with a fill and then finish. Currently stops abruptly - not even any reverb
3) A midi editor without having to go out to a DAW to edit the notes, though this is probably too low-level a feature to be added via a simple firmware update

Once I advance from noob status I'm sure I'll have some others.

Would also definitely echo the annoyance about not being able to see where the ports are without pulling the board out and being over the back of it! Totally unnecessary.

Another one for the wish list:

Whenever the typewriter keyboard is displayed, if you press the upper case (Shift) key and then press a key, my preference would be that the keyboard then revert to lower case. That's the way most devices work, I believe. You type one upper case letter and the keyboard reverts to lower case. iPads allow you to double-press the Shift key to get Caps Lock, but I can live without that on the MODX.

I second that, Derek, as regards the restriction on only being able to select a midi channel for Tx and not Rx per part. I'm using the MODX as a tone generator and Cubase as my DAW. Being able to have more than one part played from a single midi channel would fit in neatly with Cubase's way of setting up external instruments, which allows only a single instantiation of the External Instrument plugin, thus one MIDI channel.

Cheers

Lots of great suggestions there folks. Yamaha are aware of this thread so keep them coming...or perhaps there are no more? ;)
