MODX8 Polyphony Issue - HELP -

Unread post by yochris55 » Mon Oct 29, 2018 5:09 pm

Just received a MODX8 to replace my old workhorse MOXF8.

I have noticed a frustrating polyphony issue, similar to something I experienced on the MO8 boards. When play a multi-timbral performance, ESPECIALLY involving strings, I have lots of notes cutting short or not responding.

This happens even with the volume turned down on every part except one.

If I build a 3-part performance, with piano, Rhodes and pad, everything is cool. If I build another 3-part performance, same piano, same Rhodes, but with strings instead of the pad- horrible polyphony problem.

This also seems to happen if I exceed 4 parts. As soon as I reach 6 parts or so, the polyphony problem surfaces again.

Anyone else noticing this???? Should I send this unit back for a replacement?

Any help would be most welcome, thanks!

Hi Chris, welcome to yamahamusicians.com :)

Not come across any polyphony issues myself but I will test it this evening using the same parts as you. Can you though give me the exact parts you are using so I can replicate it? Probably others will try it before me but I would like to test it myself too.

Thanks Saul!

Parts:

Concert Grand
Vintage Case
Natural Wurli
Analog

Works fine with these four. If I add Lush strings, Background strings- any strings, really- polyphony problem ensues. Remove the strings, and the problem improves, but does not go away entirely. If I start a whole new performance, and load those original four again, things are OK once again. Same thing if I start with those four and add any 2-3 additional parts.

Thought I would have an A/B performance, two groups of four, with a piano, Rhodes, wurly and pad / strings in each group of four. This would be ideal for me. Can't do it without this polyphony problem.

This is what I tried for that:

Concert Grand
Vintage Case
Natural Wurly
Analog

Full Concert Grand or Glasgow
Vintage '74
Ray's Wurly
Lush or Background

Another note: I have loaded in the Bosendorfer piano from Yamaha Synth, and also a Vintage Keys expansion from the same site. Maybe this has somehow contributed to the problem?

Ok so just tested with your parts and even added a couple more but no polyphony issues at all! I also have the Bosendorfer Imperial Grand loaded.

If you have performed a factory reset and are still experiencing this note dropping I think there may be an issue here that needed to be dealt with by the store you bought the MODX from. I really tried to hit the polyphony limit but could not replicate the issues you are experiencing.

I tried to reproduce and I think I can. What happens is that when releasing a note after playing a lot of notes with held sustain pedal it gets a bit weird and the last note has no proper release. Is that what you are seeing as well? And yes, it happens if all but one parts have their volume to 0. I guess for whatever reason they are still eating up polyphony. If you instead mute them then this does not happen.

It seems this happens only on the MODX but not on the Montage. Weird. Maybe some bug in the MODX firmware. Or after all the processing resources on the Montage allow more? I mean when this happens I am way beyond 128 voice polyphony - assuming the parts with volume 0 still consume something...

Loading the Bosendorfer should not produce any problem, I am pretty sure. After all I have it on the Montage as well.

Thanks for the help, guys! My issue is pretty much as described by Stevie18, only it seems to happen to me sooner. I just hit a couple of chords, and it starts up. I will try a factory reset. Also, that Vintage Keys expansion is pretty old; I was thinking maybe it is corrupting something. I will try it out without that expansion loaded, and see if that changes anything.

Ahh I'm not using a sustain pedal so perhaps that is the important aspect of this.

Really though there should be no differences between Montage and MODX so perhaps it is a bug in the MODX firmware and hopefully it will be ironed out in the next update.

Factory reset seems to have helped quite a bit. I will try to recreate that performance and see what happens.

Problem still exists, but not as bad. I can mask it by cranking up the reverb send on the string part, but I still get little "blips" as the notes get cut off. Sure seems like a polyphony issue to me. Never, ever happened on the MOXF, or any of the Motif boards I played. As previously mentioned, it happened on a MO8 that I played.

Anybody else? Any more input? Still having the problem, exclusively with string sounds. Polyphony limit hits, notes get cut off. Mute the string part, and evreything is fine.

Still can't replicate this myself. I thought it might be because I was not using a sustain pedal but I have just tried it with a sustain pedal and still no dropped notes, or at least nothing noticeable to my ears.

OK, I may have figured it out. In settings, you can indicate which sustain pedal you are using. Never seen this before. The default is an FC3 pedal, with a half damper. Once I changed it to my FC4A, things are a LOT better. Hope this helps someone with the same problem!

Nice job

Thanks for the update. I had not noticed that myself either. Although one thing I did notice was the MODX has the settings for my pedal the wrong way around so pedal down was sustain off instead of on. Sorted that but I thought it would have been auto sensing.

Hi there,

I’m having the exact same problem when I layer 4 voices
Full Concert Grand
Analog - Pad
Background - Strings
J-Pop - CPerc

And it happens when I hold down the sustain, I can’t play more than 8 notes at a time. This is very frustrating as I can’t do praise breaks and hits with the band. Please any advice or help towards this issue would be appreciated.
