Yamaha MODX Noisy Keys?

Unread post by Saul » Fri Dec 14, 2018 6:50 pm

Just wanted to start this thread so we can get some idea of how many people are having issues with their MODX keys. In particular it seems to be some MODX8 models that have problems.

Personally I don't think this is a widespread issue and possibly confined to a certain batch. This thread is to try and get some perspective. As we all know, if there is a problem with any product a forum can make it appear to be a larger issue than it really is.

First thing of course is to contact your dealer or local Yamaha service centre, depending on where you are in the world. Yamaha are generally great with customer service and will make sure your problems are sorted out quickly and efficiently.

So IF you have any clanky keys on your MODX can you post here saying how long you have had the keyboard, when the problem started, has it gotten worse over time and what if any was the resolution?

I have the issue on ~15 keys. I had the MODX 8 since September 15th. It started with one key like 3 weeks ago (at least that was when I recognized it the first time) and got worse over time. No resolution yet, Thomann agreed to send it back for repair, will be picked up on Monday.

You mean MODX, Stevie? The 88 key version?
I heard from three different people they had similar problems. One of them exchanged two MODX8 boards before he got a good one, so he thinks it’s a batch issue. I returned my MODX8 partly because of this but didn’t witness the problem myself as I’m very soft on my keys. Main reason for the return was the multitude of NAMM rumors. If these turn out less than interesting, I think I’ll get a MODX7 or MODX6.

Yes, of course, thanks for the pointing that out. I corrected the post. I do have a Montage as well but that's a Montage 6, is 2 years old and has no issue  .

I have 3 keys exhibiting the noise. At this stage they are all black keys, and it started with one key, so I expect further keys to become a problem. I've had my MODX8 for about 6 weeks. The first key noise started around 4 weeks. I have contacted my local Yamaha service tech, here in Australia, who wants to talk to the local Yamaha guys first to see if they have a "prescribed fix" formulated for it yet. As it's new product, I suspect I'll be waiting for some time on this. In the meantime, I've gone cool on using it much lately for this reason. Sometimes I midi it to my Kronos and use it as a sound module...that's my work around for now :-/

Have added a poll to this thread so we can get a clearer visual indication of how many people have problems with the MODX keys.

I have made it so you can change your vote over time, just in case you don't have problems now but they develop further down the line.

Didn't vote myself as I only had the MODX8 for a few weeks of gentle use :violin:

yeah, well I use mine gently as well TBH, it still developed on the MODX 8 as it also did on the MOXF and other Yammies that used this 88 note keybed. It is what it is, no use trying to be Yamahas champion here Fleer...

The least of my worries. Quite pleased I could return it before this problem surfaced. TBH I had some other reasons as well. Found the whole thing too bulky (and the adapter too flimsy) yet still loved the MODX approach of bringing Montage quality to this price category. Definitely appalled that Yamaha is still selling these GHS keybeds when problems have been known for so long. As I wrote, I may be getting a sub $1000 MODX7 once it gets that low.

Yeah, I tend to agree with that. If I could afford a Montage 8 (and the new roadcase that would entail) I'd go for it. As it is, as I lease keyboards, I may even send this one back in another 8 months haha! Not because sonically it is good enough, hardware wise it isn't good enough. BUT having said that to get to the pricepoint I guess Yamaha have to compromise somewhere.

It is always going to be a compromise to get down to the price the MODX sells for. We all know that but, problem keys on a new keyboard is not a compromise people are going to be willing to accept.

Also there are people who have owned more than one MODX8 and have had it replaced only for the problem to appear again so the numbers are probably slightly higher than will appear here.
