User banks

Unread post by mick_n » Wed Dec 26, 2018 8:34 pm

Silly question maybe, but for the life of me I cannot seem to find out how to access the user performance banks.

Don't see in any menus how to access them.

There are several ways. If you are in the performance home screen you can use the Dec / Inc keys to scroll through all performances. You can also use the scroll wheel for that. At some point after advancing a couple of thousand presets you will get to the user banks :).

Alternatively, press "Category Search". Then you can search by name for any performance, including the user banks. If you only want to see the user banks, then in the "Category Search" screen press on the "Bank/Favorite" on-screen button. Then in the dropdown select user. After that you can scroll through the user performances or when you search by name or category you will only see them.

Hi Mick

Strictly speaking you have one single performance bank of 640 performances. Gone are the banks of old like old Yamaha's which, since the SY days have split banks down into groups of 16. Not sure if that is what you are thinking of?

And of course you have the 8 library banks, which essentially read only once you load them.

Thank you Stevie & Derek. I think i must be having a series of "Senior moments" with this board..... i have just about bought every workstation style synth Yamaha have made and none of them have caused head scratching confusion like this one ;)

I have used the scroll wheel to get through the preset performances to the user performances........that's a hell of a lot of scrolling! So it seems like the "Category Search" that Stevie mentioned is the way to go.

Slowly getting to grips with the loading of user files/libraries, etc.

One more question (for now!) Loading single voices....is it possible to load, for example my MOXF patches, as "single" patches to the MODX?

Thank you again from an elderly & somewhat confused mick_n. :)

In Category search you can use the menus to restrict the search to specific banks (preset, user or library). It is a new paradigm that will take time to get used to, but I understand why Yamaha have done it. Example, the EX5 had 128 Performance (256 Preset and 256 User Voices ), so the bank structure A01-A16, B01.... H16 was an efficient way of organising data.

The Montage/MODX has 1,000s of performances, so no easy way of structuring them lik the old way. Which is why Category Search is your friend, and you can make a matrix type registration of your favourites in a Live Set.

Looks like you can read MOXF data. See this Yamaha Synth Article. I've also successfully read Motif ES data into my Montage. Kudos to Yamaha for that sort of compatibility.

Agreed, there are good reasons to do it the way the have done it. If you look at VST instruments which also tend to have vast amounts of sounds, they have done it in a similar way probably for the same reasons.

Thank you again Gent's. Have some free time over the weekend to have a more determined look.

Hopefully, some 3rd party will bring out a video like they did for the MOXF. :)

I think there a lot of video tutorials over at Yamaha synth for the Montage. Not sure about the MODX, but the differences will be physical
