Using the Modx as a soundcard (audio out) - quality & lag?

Unread post by GuyDenruyter » Mon Jan 07, 2019 9:53 pm

Dear forummembers,

Any thoughts/experiences on the quality of the audio out of the Modx, using it as a soundcard for output of sound of my laptop?

The reason I like to use my Modx as a soundcard is that I am doing a DJ-gig (from my laptop) and I want to use some live Modx Arps along with my set.

(1) As far as a can tell, the audio quality is good, but still I have the impression that it is slightly inferior than e.g. my old MOTU external sound card. This might be because of the post-processing that is done in the Modx (Master EQ and Master FX), although there is an option to bypass those. I use the "digital 1 & 2" outputs in the USB ASIO interface.

(2) My impression is that the audio quality is slightly better if using the "chan 1 & 2" outputs in the USB ASIO interface (instead of the "digital 1 & 2" outputs I mentioned above). However, then the beats seem to be slightly out of sync (I synchronise my Modx to the Midi Clock of my DJ Software).

Any thoughts (from wild thoughts up to deep knowledge) are more than welcome!

I've been listening to a bunch of music that I know every well on iTunes (Macbook Pro) played through the USB connection on the MODX.
I think it sounds fantastic.

Agreed. And in addition the latency is no problem, either. I use it to output VSTs from my Mac in parallel to the local sounds and find the latency very low. Absolutely playable.

FWIW: It works great as an audio interface for iPads ... latency is trivial to imperceptible (IMHO), even when playing percussive sounds like pianos, drums & Percussion, etc.
