So, NAMM has been and gone - and...

Unread post by pax-eterna » Wed Jan 30, 2019 11:38 pm

Still no news of a MODX upgrade software package...for all the Yamaha defenders out there...I still maintain it is going to be rare for Yamaha to give away a surfeit amount of free upgrades for the bottom priced in this whole Motif/Montage/MODX range...

NAMM was an ideal opportunity to announce, even if it was only an intention to upgrade the software. I'll probably be ditching mine at the end of the lease (about September) and I'll make a bold prediciton (haha) that even by then, there'll be nothing...other than a bug fix perhaps.

I spoke to Yamaha about this earlier today and they have a whole load of updates in the offing, possibly for MusikMesse. I will see if I can tease any useful info out of them but as I mentioned before, Montage and MODX are a long term prospect for Yamaha with plenty of scope to add more features via software so I am very confident there will be some pretty big updates coming in the not too distant future.

Will update you as I know more.

haha thanks Saul - ever the optimist

Unfortunately I have become a bit of a cynic in these matters over the past 30 or so years!

If a few of the bete noirs cna be addressed prior to September, I MAY even keep it...but I'd need to know they were coming a long time before...I am planning on going back to a software rig for live work, I'd rather not, especially if Yamaha come to the party, but I do have my doubts.

Anyway hopefully you are correct :)

Well I can assure you I am usually carrying that flag for the cynics amongst us although lately I have been trying to look at things in a more positive light...there is a limit of course ;) If Yamaha don't come through you will hear me banging the big old cynic drum very loud indeed!

What kind of upgrades were you seriously expecting...?

On a product that just came out 4 months ago...

They are flying off the retail shelves over here in the U.S.

All of the major music retailers have sold out of the 88 key version; and most have sold out of the 76 key version (a few have some but very low stock).

They are on back order with waiting lists.

Sales figures do not a complete keyboard make! First blush is great, but then after use the little foibles come into play...there are several so just do a search ;)

It's those operational things that, personally speaking I'd like to see...I don't need any new features, it's go plenty already...it's the programming and other operational annoyances that could be fixed easily I'd imagine..

Well, I don't know what "little foibles" you are talking about... ;)

But I would like to see them do an update/upgrade to include the Bosendorfer samples so they are already in the MODX like they do in the new CP73/88 - instead of making us take up almost half (412 MB) of the scant user memory they give us (1000 MB).

I am sure that is doable.

I was also hoping for some upgrades to be announced at NAMM. Still, considering the upgrade history - and Saul‘s and BMs comments - I am sure more is to come.

I would be very surprised if they could include the Bosendorfer into the firmware upgrade, unless they reduce the amount of user sample space. That would mean that they left 500 MB of the flash unused. Why would they do that???

Myself and Chris (Parametric) will be meeting with Yamaha on the 6th Feb so if you have any questions about updates etc now would be a good time to ask ;)

I think just ask if there are to be updates, what they will be and the planned release date...that'd cover it I reckon!

Will definitely do that. I know Genos owners are looking for answers too.

I agree with pologuy, I would not expect any major upgrades to be announced for a board that only started shipping a few months ago. And while there are exceptions, for the most part, companies don't announce updates until they happen.

Yeah, probably wishful thinking...

But they really could take out many of the useless, silly, sounds they have programed in it and there would be room for the Bosendorfer - or give us the option to do so if we wanted.

Yeah I am going to raise the keybed issues although I am pretty sure they will say it is not widespread. Will let you know.
