MIDI & Mixer Advice for MODX6

Unread post by modalmojo » Wed Feb 06, 2019 12:26 am

Hi,

I only have minimal MIDI and audio hardware experience, hope the experts here can help me out.

I am planning to buy MODX6, and use my digital piano Roland FP-30 to control MODX6 (and likely one more synth in the future), FP-30 has:

USB Type B Computer port
USB Type A Memory port
Stereo 1/4-inch Phone Jack

What kind of MIDI equipment and Audio Mixer do I need to accomplish the task?

Thanks for the help! 0-)

Since the FP30 does not have a standard 5-pin MIDI port, there is no way to connect it directly to a MODX (or almost any other keyboard). You can do it if you connect through a computer (or iPad/iPhone). There are also converters you can use:

Once my MODX7 arrives later this month, I aim to hook it up to my Yamaha HS5 speakers and Roland FA-08 with a Yamaha MG10XU Mixer (I need to buy that too yet)

Perhaps, that is a mixer that could meet some of your needs

Why don't you just route your FA-08 audio out thru MODX Audio input and bypass the mixer altogether? You can then control your FA-08 volume using the dedicated knob on MODX, use the MODX effects on it, the Motion Control, etc...

Would I be able to route the Stereo 1/4-inch Phone Jack of Roland FP-30 (it is the only audio output...) thru MODX Audio input to output the Roland FP-30 sound thru the speakers connected from MODX? If not, what equipment should I buy in order to do that?

Thanks!

You would have to buy a little splitter cable which splits the stereo phone jack to two mono phone jacks. Then you go into the MODX. Then the sound of the FP30 sounds come out of the same output as the MODX sounds.

You can adjust the relative volume using the hardware knob and also program the FP30 volume using the MODX performance settings. You can also apply MODX effects to the FP30 sounds. Programmable per performance as well...

Sounds fantastic! Thanks for the advice!

Would I be able to route more than one synth thru MODX at the same time and use Roland FP30 as the midi controller for all of them included MODX?
