Modx and ipad..

Unread post by Bachus »

I will be expanding my modx8 and Genos with Ipad sounds..
I will be using AUM (backed by uadiobus) as the host..
Now most things are covered by modx..

things the ipad needs to fill :
- virtual analogue, both monophonic and poly synth..
- wavetable synthesis
- huge orchestral sounds
- a VL type of physical modeling synth
- electric piano..
- a steinway piano

Just looking for tips..
What are your ipad experiences..
What are your favorite auv3 and iaa apps?

Any input is welcome

I use Cubasis with a fairly full complement of iOS apps.

Korg ...
Odyssei: Great sounding VA suitable for mono and some poly duty.
Module: Pianos, EPs, all sorts of stuff, including a full "Triton" set available.
iWavestation: It's a Wavestation ... what else to say?
iM1: Comes with ALL the ROM cards.
iMonoPoly: Excellent mono and poly synth character.
iPolySix: uh-huh, it's like THAT.

IK Multimedia ...
Syntronik: It's like a catalog of famous analog and digital synth sounds.

Arturia ...
iMini: It's a MiniMoog in spirit and attitude, even if imperfect in its emulation.
iSEM: If you ever wanted a Oberheim 4-voice, this is your muse.
iSpark: Every famous drum machine ever made. Here's your LinnDrum, DMX, etc.

I do know of one for the Steinway piano requirement and that’s Pianoteq from a company called Modartt. It’s the only product I know of that has the imprimatur of Steinway & Sons itself. It comes in three levels - Stage, Studio and Pro. I started with Stage. This give you minimal tweaking and a choice of two sound packs. I chose the Steinway D for grands and an upright acoustic. I plan on upgrading to Studio soon to give me more control of the model and another 3 sound packs. There is a free (limited) demo you can try for yourself.

Oops, sorry! I do have two that I use on my iPad that I can recommend, Ravenscroft 275 and Ivory (via the Korg Module).

Good idea indeed. I have an iPad Mini 2 with A7 CPU in it. I hardly can play more then one sound at once.
Which iPad do you recommend in order to have enough CPU power?

Is the iPad 2018 enough? It sells for around 300 Euro at the moment...

If you're running multiple apps, I think the most important spec is RAM... which is a spec Apple doesn't publish, but you can find the info online. iPad Mini 2 has 1 GB Ram, I think all 2018+ iPads have at least 2 GB.

I hope this does not count as "necroposting".

I just want to note that I recently upgraded from a iPad Mini 3 to the new 2019 iPad Air. This increased RAM from 1GB to 3GB, jumps from A7 to A12 chip ... and of course increase screen size.

If of interest, I'll post my observations.

Yes, that would be helpful!

So far as performance tests, I have run the following on a 2019 iPad Air:

Korg Gadget2 with ...
1 Instance of Salsburg Piano
1 Instance of Montreal Electric Piano
2 instances of Dublin
2 instances of Phoenix
2 instances of Lexington (iOdyssey)
2 instances of Darwin (iM1)
2 instances of Memphis (iMS-20)
1 instance of Pompei (iPolySix)
1 instance of London (Drum Machine)

1 each of Arturia iMini, iSem and iSpark in the background, as well as 1 instance of IK Multimedia Syntronik, with 4 gadget instances of Taipei (MIDI OUT)used to send MIDI to them.

Another instance of Taipei was used to play my DSI Rev2.
One more instance of Taipei used to drive my King Korg.

That's a BUNCH of stuff running all at once ... no glitches, hiccups, clicks or pops ... and no noticeable MIDI timing errors.

I used my MODX7 as the audio interface, but did not sequence any MODX7 tracks or sounds. I configured the MODX7 to be "MIDI Local OFF" to record parts into the Gadget2 sequencer. In actual practice, I'll likely not be driving more than 8 iPad-based instruments at once, and/or another 5-6 external pieces of hardware. I need to test the limits of the Taipei gadget in driving a lot of external MIDI, using multiple iOS MIDI interfaces.

A 2019 iPad Mini5 should yield the same performance. You'll just get a smaller screen.

Jesus God that's impressive... If you're doing all that, why not just a dumb controller and save the $$?

I like having options, lol.
NOTE: I am no longer using this setup regularly, as I now use a very powerful laptop running "Cantabile" host software, and a selection of the usual VSTs. I recently sold my MODX (possibly replacing w/ a Montage) and now use a Fantom-7 as a master controller and audio interface. A MODX or Montage would work fine as well.

And which app is responsible for opening different projects ( receiving MSB LSB PC ) from Modx?
Just curious, cause i am investigating this as well.

Afaik Audio Bus app is good for this but have not tried it yet.
