USB Flash Drive 3.0

Unread post by pilot63v » Fri May 03, 2019 7:52 pm

Anybody notice a loading/saving speed change on the MODX with a 3.0 Flash Drive? Just got a Sandisk 3.0 32gig and thought it might save a few seconds on the loading time. It advertises a 150mb exchange rate but I'm sure thats on a Mac or PC. I'll let you know if i see a appreciable change. Thanks :D

I think the data transfer rate varies depending on what it is you are saving/loading
Although USB devices 1.1 to 3.0 can be used on this instrument, the amount of time for saving to or loading from the USB device may differ depending on the type of data or the status of the instrument.

Yes. Yamaha print this statement in the Manual, but then don't explain it . . . . .

In my understanding, data is data, and the performance should only depend on which spec drive

you plug in.

USB3 should give a faster transfer that USB2 (since the MODX is stated to support both).

I'd be interested to know how the type of data is significant . . . ?

Status presumably means, whether the MODX is ready (or not) to perform a transfer . . . . ?

I wonder though if the MODX actually has a USB 3.0 port? It doesn't say in the manual, just that it "supports" USB 3.0 and as we know you CAN use a USB 3 drive in a USB 2.0 port. I do wish they would be clearer about the spec. I spend countless hours trying to nail down the true specification for some of their products and it get's frustrating after a while.

You're probably meaning - is the plastic tongue Blue (usb3) or Black (usb1+2)?

That difference should be a universal "standard" - but in these days - who knows . . . .

Perhaps one of our owners could look and confirm?

Looks like a standard USB 2.0 port to me. Would not surprise me if it was USB 2.0 as Yamaha have a habit of being behind the times in terms of connections.

Took 18mins and 50 seconds to load the Motif XF performances into my MODX library file. And that’s with the 3.0 USB flash drive. Haven’t compared that with the old 2.0 flash drive but hopefully that an improvement. I guess with 512 performances it will take a while. Oh well. As long as the MODX sounds this good, I can wait.

Don’t forget it is not just the load speed but also FLASH write speed, internal transfers of data between subsystems ( the Yamaha EX5 SCSI transfer speed) was crippled due to this, etc.
