first few questions...before purchase

Unread post by Chensa » Sun May 12, 2019 10:59 pm

Hi everyone!

So after almost 15 years, I'm considering retiring my Yamaha Motif ES. It has done well for me, but I think it's time to get something more up to date and a lot lighter. I would be using it with my Korg Kronos, and occasionally my Hammond XK-1 (which has it's own MIDI peculiarities). I may even use it with my Laptop....someday....

Before I buy this, I'd like to know if you can give a brief heads up on some questions I have.

1) I'll have to recreate A LOT of custom programs that I've made over the years. It'd be great if I could just load those into the MODX but I know that probably is a pipe dream. Is there a huge learning curve from the Motif ES to the MODX?

2) I will be using it as a Master to control the Korg. Is that going to be fairly simple?

Thanks much!

I'm curious about those custom programs, since I picked up a motif ES rack not too long ago. What sort of stuff have you done?

:D I don't know if you can load them into a MODX, but if you can't and you find them hard to let go of, the rack really is a space saver.

I've had to recreate sounds from a lot of albums from Abby Road to The Wall and many more in between. I use multiple keyboards, but have relied heavily on the Motif too.

A rack is a good idea, but not really practical to bring to performances...I have enough to bring LOL

Hi,

I cannot comment on learning curve coming from an ES as I came from an older EX5 to a Montage.

You can import all of your ES data into the Montage. I have imported some old libraries I had for my Motif Rack ES, and I cannot hear any differences in sound. Kudos to Yamaha for that backwards compatibility.

The Montage and Kronos go really well together. I have a Montage 7 (bottom tier) and Kronos X 61 (top tier). There are different MIDI modes in the Montage/MODX that you may need to experiment with. I have kept my Montage in its default mode, as I use a computer running Cantabile on stage, which acts as a MIDI hub and it controls all of my equipment.
