Can someone explain how this effect is working?

Unread post by mitya » Sun May 19, 2019 8:00 pm

Hi all

Trying to get my head around the motion sequencer. I thought I was doing pretty well until I came across performances where motion sequencing was clearly happening yet I can't track it down in the part's (or performance's) settings.

For example, take the performance SuperGlider MW DA (Live sets > Motion seq.) and solo the 2nd part. There's clearly motion sequencing going on; that glissando effect stops happening if you turn the master MS off.

Yet when I go into the 2nd part's settings and go to MS > Lane, the lanes are all off. What's more, if I turn off part MS, the effect still happens. Thinking it must be some hitherto-unknown funkiness in mod control > control assign, I went there, but again, nothing is set.

So then I went to the MS settings on the performance. But the exact same is true there, too.

There's no arp involved, either, so I really don't know how this works. Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks in advance.

I don't have a MODX, otherwise I'd try that patch to see what you're talking about.

But isn't glissando normally just a combination of the Portamento CC settings (On/Off and Time) plus the notes you play with a legato style?

Are you saying there's some kind of glissando or sweep effect going on even when playing just a single note?

If so, could it be something programmed into the part itself (e.g., inherent in the voice's audio sample) rather than something created by a sequence of MIDI events? For instance, on my Yamahas there is a "Fargo" voice that has a filter sweep that's part of the voice itself.

The fact that the effect in question occurs even with motion sequencing turned off suggests that that part doesn't use motion sequencing, and that the reason the patch is categorized as it is has to do with one of the other parts.

Have you tried monitoring the MIDI output to see what sorts of events are being transmitted while playing that part?

EDIT: Wait, I guess you said turning off MS for the whole performance makes the glissando effect stop, which suggests that it isn't part of the sample; whereas turning off MS for just the part you're soloing does not make the glissando effect stop. That does seem confusing.

Thanks for the reply. Glad it's not just me who's confused by this!

I don't think it's programmed into the sample because the superknob automatically goes round when holding the note, as though there's programming going on here.

And yes, as noted, it stops when master MS is turned off.

Go to Performance/Motion Control/KnobAuto, tap SuperKnobMS.

Ha - I was just about to post saying I'd found it. Thanks, Ajay (and SeaGtGruff) - it is indeed there.

Well, I've learned something. That was driving me mad...
