MODX / Montage Rack

Unread post by EXer » Mon May 27, 2019 9:33 am

My wish :

► a Yamaha rackmount synth, with the synth engine of the Montage (*) and the real time controllers of the MODX

which could be fully edited from its own panel, like the Triton Rack, the Yamaha EX5R or the V-Synth XT
(not a rack that cannot be edited without a software like the TR-Rack or the Motif Rack).

(*) differences between MODX and Montage

There are not many new rackmount instruments nowadays, yet they have several advantages:

• every musician could chose a master keyboard with the action they prefer
• when used intensely on stage, a keyboard wears out much more than the synth itself ; a master KB is easier to exchange than a built-in KB
• no accumulation of useless keyboards in the studio when you have a lot of gear and limited space
• no need to pay for a KB when you already have a good master KB

And I believe I it would be feasible:

Then, an OS upgrade which brings AN-X and VL-X and which brings back the FS features of the FS1R into FM-X, and we'll have the EX5R of the 21st century!

Why not put the idea on Yamaha's Ideascale page and see if it attracts any interest? I would be doubtful though, all of the big players seem to have moved away from racks?

I think it would be an excellent idea and also make it a usb host so you can use it with keyboards that only have a usb connection. Yamaha are missing quite a substantial market by not bringing out rack versions of synths like Montage.

There is also the Dexibell VIVO SX7 which also acts as a usb host :)

How did you get on with the Behringer D Chris?

KORG triton rack dates way back to year 2000. As a realist, Korg has not shown an interest in any further rack module.
Even with numerous requests, it has not happened.

I see the XS Rack was introduced October 2008 [ ?]

Is it more likely Yamaha would do a suitable MODX rack module ? At least , Yamaha has
followed that lineage. While Korg has not.

Or is it more likely that we shouldn't hold our breath ?

Obviously, it would have to be cheaper than the MODX 6.

I believe 99% of product decisions is about the money.

I am favor of it, but interested in raising the right questions to evaluate
to potential of this getting done.

Thanks

I think Korg's last rackmount synth was the Radias in 2006. They also had the 2007 M3 which was offered as a module but was too big to fit in a rack.

If Roland Integra 7 had been a runaway best seller, I think we'd have seen more interest from Korg and Yamaha in that market. I suspect the Roland has sold okay, but not in the huge numbers that would make Korg and Yam believe they had to get back into that market. I think the "sound module" market has been largely usurped by laptops/tablets.

I think you could be right on the mark there with the last point. Why do I need a rack unit if a have a small NUC PC in my gig rack capable of running any VST of my choice?

The only real answer is if you want a specific synth in that form factor, but I can only surmise the potential market is no longer big enough to get a return on investment. Not the news the OP wants to here, but it is the same as me bemoaning the fact that Line6 no longer do left handed variaxes. I want one (even happy to pay a modest premium over a right hooker), but it seems I am in the minority.....

HI Scott, I forgot the Korg M3 had the M3M module. Good point, even while the M3M did not fit into a gear rack.

Ridias module is Virtual Analog. I was thinking of racks with standard acoustic instruments plus synth stuff.

I like your insight on the Integra , a formidable instrument.

I should have mentioned that Korg went the IOS route a few years ago. Likely a smart move on their part.

Hi Derek, I think thats the kind of questions and points why a Yamaha might not create a MODX rack

Almost always about the money or ROI 'risk'

Hi, Greg

Yes, a Company's first duty is to its shareholders, sadly, not its customers, so if there is risk of not getting your investment money back from the projected sales they will factor that, and market interest in a product is of course key. I've filled my available rack space anyway!

BTW, are you the same GregC from Korg Forums? Irrespective, welcome to Yamaha Forums. The Kronos makes a great pairing with the Montage/MODX :)

Hi Derek, one and the same, thanks ! I am finally coming around to adding a MODX to my Kronos 88. I am also gaining admiration
for Montage, which would be ideal.

I thought so :)

I've paired a Montage 7, which replaced my faithful EX5 (not before getting an EX5R, though, to keep the sound), with my Kronos X 61 and I think they are a great pairing. The Kronos remains a fantastic board, indeed I was going through some patches the other day and reminded myself that I need to do more with those ones. but there is something about the Yamaha sound that is different. Love both of them! :)
