Yamaha CP73 & CP88 Essential Knowledge Guide

Unread post by Saul » Tue Jan 15, 2019 6:25 pm

Yamaha CP88 and CP73 Essential Knowledge.png
This Essential Knowledge guide from Yamaha should give you all the info you need to know about the CP73 & CP88.

The overall impression I get from reading this and looking at all the other info available is that Yamaha are looking to take over NORD territory here and by the looks of things that may well happen. Although they also have some stiff competition from Dexibell which with their ability to load SF2 files I would say gives them a slight edge?

Anyway have a read and let me know what you think.

Yeah I like the way they have sectioned things out. Also like the use of what looks to be an OLED display. Looks quite classy :)

Yes, seems to be taking on the Nord Piano, and to some extent, also competes with Korg Grandstage and SV1, and Crumar Seven. I don't really see the Dexibell in this niche so much, as it doesn't really have that hands-on interface, which is so much of the appeal. Yamaha also likely the advantage of probably the best actions of the bunch. And the low weight of the 73 is very appealing.

Clearly taking design cues from Nord Stage. Given the popularity of the Nord, and it's common inclusion in backline riders ... smart move on Yamaha's part. The price is the clincher.

This is exactly the area that Dexibell are so good at and I think if you take a look at the Vivo S9 there is definitely competition there.
Dexibell Vivo S9.png
Dexibell Vivo S9
The exclusive DEXIBELL technology, called “True 2 Life” (or ‘T2L’ for short), used by DEXIBELL VIVO digital pianos, is part of a new revolution in musical instrument specifications thanks to its:
– Unlimited Notes Polyphony.
– 24 bit and 48Khz.
– Over 15 seconds of Recorded Waves in 3D surround.
– Combination of “Sampling and Modelling” technology with unique algorithms.
VIVO S9 has a Wave Memory bank of 1.5 GB with the possibility to fully reconfigure the instrument using new sounds from the DEXIBELL library but also from standard “Sound Font” format files too, which are readily available online.
The VIVO S9 is the best solution for all professional musicians looking for a state of the art digital piano combined with digital organ.
The Vivo S9 also has a fully weighted keyboard with wooden keys and it feels superb to play. I can't afford one but I would buy if I could :)

Also I hear Nord as a company are not doing so well at the moment. It's prime time for Yamaha and Dexibell to take over that spot.

I've just watched a bit of Woody's review on YouTube and noticed the CP has sticks for pitch bend and modulation. I like that idea too.

I think overall the new CP looks really cool. I like the metal toggle switches. I has a kind of cool retro look mixed with high tech and the more I see it the more I like it. I just lament the fact I can't afford one. Still, there is always the new Casio's which whilst not bristling with the Yamaha CP's plethora of features does at least give us a super top quality hammer action weighted keybed for very little money :)

Ah, I was thinking of the other Dexibels, the ones that aren't also 9-drawbar organs. I put those in a different category. That's why in my post I put these new CPs up against the Nord Piano, but not Nord Electro or Nord Stage.

It seems to be a direct competitor to the Kawai MP 11 and MP 8...

Dexibell also have some new models for NAMM so keep a look out for those ;)

That's an interesting looking bit of kit. The MP11 is much older of course and looks a little dated to me. Still prefer the Yamaha or Dexibell S9 :)
