The New Yamaha Commercial Audio Team

Unread post by Saul » Mon Feb 12, 2018 6:21 pm

Just though I would mention this as it there was a press release about it a couple of weeks back.

Seems there has been some moving around of personnel at Yamaha UK and what was the 'Pro Audio' division appears to have been merged with the 'commercial audio' division.

Not entirely sure this is a good thing, especially from our perspective. Every time Yamaha do something like this they "seem" to take another step back from their end users and independent Yamaha focused websites. Of course I am sure that is not how they see it but I can only go on past experience and that is how it looks to me.

Anyway, thought you might like to put names to faces and so on. These are the guys behind promoting things like Montage, reface etc in the UK.

Chris Irvine is the only name I recognise from the days that I used to actively deal with Yamaha. He was (and I am sure still is) a very helpful guy.

Chris was instrumental about five or six years back in ensuring that the EX5 ROM upgrade was available for as long as possible, and helped out several people in Europe who couldn't get it via their local distributors.

Yeah Chris Irvine is a good chap. I used to deal with him a lot a couple of years back but our friend there Robert Webster (his boss) was a bit miffed at my review of the Montage and I was moved outside the circle of trust. I understand that in a way. They are there to promote their products not have them negatively and in their minds unjustly critiqued.

BUT, I am an "end user" not an employee of Yamaha. If I don't like something I am going to say I don't like it. Anyway my main criticism was about the price not the product itself and only because I couldn't afford one..which I pointed out on many occasions. What they don't take into account is the amount of times I have defended Yamaha on forums all over the web and how we have collectively promoted and supported their products for FREE over the past 15 years.

Luckily KORG, Roland etc don't have the same problems with criticism :)

Yamaha seem to react badly to even constructive criticism. Try suggesting a feature improvement on yamahasynth.com and you will be told that you do not understand how the Montage works yet.

By way of example: I run the Kronos and Montage in their respective Setlist modes.

The Kronos will accept Bank MSB/LSB to select a setlist and the program change will select a setlist slot. All nice and logical
The Montage will not allow you to do that. You have to manually select a setlist and then a Bank MSB/LSB will select one of 16 pages in a set list (each with 16 slots selected via a Program change from 0-15).

Mention this on Yamahasynth and you will be accused of being worried about running out of Performance slots and that you do not understand the Montage and the way it works.

To my simple brain, if the Montage allows many set lists, you would expect to have Band A in setlist 1 and Band B in setlist 2 (as I do on the Kronos). Yamaha says the Montage does not work like this and I should use Setlist pages instead for each Setlist (up to 16 songs per setlist then). Yes, I could do that, but it is less than logical.....

So I can only surmise that the Yamaha Quirks department have been at work again, and Yamaha will defend even daft implementation choices to the hilt.

I did suggest that in the same way that a recent OS update introduced a CC that allows you to select performance scenes, I'd be happy if they left their Bank MSB/LSB implementation as it is, but provided a CC to select a set list. That would work for me from within Cantabile

I guess it's predictable that Yamaha and Korg should operate differently.

They have different "good ideas" guys on their respective teams . . . .

However, I don't think its helpful, to rubbish the input of users who are using the product "out there"

in real life situations.

IMO - All that response is going to do, is to persuade you to change the Montage for another Kronos

I would suggest that both YOU and THEY would feel better with a . . . .
Thank you for your input - we will pass it to the teams concerned for consideration in a future update
How hard is that to say?

As Saul has said - We are NOT the enemy, furthermore, we are INTERESTED in their products . . . . 8O

A strange response indeed.

I think THEY think I AM the enemy

I would be very surprised if they ever loaned me anything again. Been trying to get a low end acoustic out of them for the past five months and have either been ignored or passed from one person to another and then forgotten. Which is a real shame as I think Yamaha make great acoustic guitars.

This circling of the corporate wagons so to speak doesn't really work though because now I turn to other makers who are more than happy to loan me their guitars and keyboards. Hence why there is a distinct lack of 'Yamaha' reviews on our 'Yamaha' focused website

I wonder if Yamaha ever stopped to consider that maybe our criticisms are valid? I doubt it :/:

So I guess it's Casio, Korg, Roland and Native Instruments for keyboards from now on plus of course a wide and varied selection of guitars from around the world. It's all about the musicians and the music in the end though. That's what is really important :)
