RE: Moog Synth / GK Amp (help?)

Unread post by monsterjazzlicks » Wed Nov 07, 2018 1:28 am

Hi folks,

If I was to play left-hand-bass using a Moog synth, then do you think this GK amplifier would be suited/suffice, please (this is a NEWER model than the one below on eBay in question - there is a video review there as well):

https://www.richtonemusic.co.uk/product ... ing%202018

I have emailed a guy on eBay selling one but he said he has never tried a keyboard through it before (as he is a real bass player). It's £100 starting price and he is the 2nd owner;

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gallien-Krue ... :rk:1:pf:0

He seems like a nice guy and has offered to meet me in Chester for petrol costs.

I have 2 x Mackie SRM speakers that I would like to keep free for my Rhodes and a Juno-6 synth. Plus, the Moog is in MONO so it would sound a bit weird just sounding from one side, if you know what I mean.

Many thanks in advance.

Paul

Hi Paul,

Unless you specially WANT to amp the Moog separately, why not get a SMALL mixer, such as the Soundcraft notepad folio?

soundcraft.com/en/products/spirit-notepad

Yes they are legacy now, but can be had quite cheaply . . .

I have one of these, they are great and VERY quiet. Two stereo channels for your Rhodes and Synth, and 4 mono

channels with 48v if needed.

The monos have a pan - so you can put the Moog anywhere.

PLUS you can fit it ON a mic stand if needed (It's tiny) to have right by you . . .

Hi,

I'd be wary of pushing keyboards through guitar amps, as they are optimised for those instruments and rarely have a full frequency response, which may or may not be an issue for bass sounds you want to make with the Moog.

Maybe worth finding the specs of the amp and checking them.

Hi Chris,

Thanks, I never knew about those desks before. There is a quick/interesting You Tube interview on them:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mqj9pVRY0uU

If I was to buy a desk then I would probably look at buying a B-stock one. It can be a bit risky buying 2nd-hand, I have found (pots/crackles, loose connectors).

Hi Derek,

I kinda know what you mean. I know when playing a bass thru a keys amp it can sound terrible!

But because I would literally only be playing bass-lines (and the timbre/freq. of the Moog set to a 'deep' tone) I am anticipating it might be OK?

Hi Paul,

Here's the Manual of my (older) Folio mixer. It has no USB connectivity, due to it's age, but as a traditional mixer it's fine.

The diagrams inside show a myriad ways of connecting it, depending on what you are doing . . .

Page 18 especially shows ALL the Leads/connectors it can use - with ALL the wiring details . . . Neat . .

If you NEED USB connectivity - then obviously go for a later model

Hi, Paul

I would say it depends on the sound and the harmonics in it, but it then limits you to only playing those sounds that are OK in a bass amp. What if you wanted to let rip with some Moog Leads? I'd personally get a keyboard amp with a full range. Not sure why you don't mix it in with your other keys if what you are going into has a full range and good bass reproduction?

Nice but pricey, and it's a guitar amp! I already have a Fender DeVille amp.

It would just be myself and a drummer jamming over grooves (possibly a sax player later on down the line). The Moog would cover the bass (L.H.), and the Rhodes and Juno-6 melody/chords (R.H). So no R.H./lead on the Moog.

I suppose I could use Chris's idea of feeding all 3 into a desk and running them into my Mackie SRMs. But I thought it would be fatter/punchier/cleaner to have a dedicated amp for the bass. That way there would be more 'definition', if you get me.

I would suggest that much depends on the degree of Bass you are looking for from the Moog . . . .

As you know, the Moog doesn't really have limits as to how low it will go

If you want Earth-shaking Bass, and you want to amp it separately then you'll need large Cones to move lots of Air . . . .

Even 15" . . . .

I don't know the SRMs, but the mixer route would enable you to try and see if they can handle the low stuff?

Here's a clip which has the Moog really low down - is this what you're contemplating? - Check from ~ 7'45"

This is a fan-video made from a variety of sources - there IS some Wembley 1975 clips, but the soundtrack is definitely the

1975 Vinyl Album. This I know 'cause I have the full video of this, and at the Wembley Show, the Moog was out of tune

and Rick adjusts it on screen - although the album soundtrack which was used in this vid was NOT out of tune . . IYSWIM . . .

Hi Chris,

Thanks a lot for the video link (I watched it all actually!), and information.

If you listen to the LH in this short upload you will hear the Moog growling, and all that. I used a Multi Moog here (the RH was recorded in a separate pass).

btw - the Rhodes sound OK through my Fender DeVille amp, but the Juno-6 and Poly-61 both sound thin and awful!

Nice Paul . . . .

I'm working up to buying a Behringer Model D at some point, so I hope to be able to visit some of those sounds soon.

Ok, I know it's not the real deal, but probably close enough for me.

I simply can't justify the price of a MiniMoog Model D reissue for what I do . . . . .

Actually, quite apart from the sounds, I'm hoping I can LEARN how these sounds are put together -

(having the real analog Knobs to play with) - and eventually be able to "Go" to a particular sound,

rather than stumbling across it . . . .

Hi Chris,

Behringer are releasing quite a lot of mid-prices gear or recent. I have a 16 channel mixer and a 8 channel rackmount di-box.

The bass amp on eBay sold for over £250 so I bailed out! It was not in great shape 'cosmetically'.

Ta,

Paul
