A good number of participants and the forum is quite lively. As far as I know, forums are having a hard time right now due to the rise in popularity of social networks.

It has been an issue for some time now. Many forums are dying but this one has managed to ride the waves and has fairly steady visitor numbers. In large part, it is a testament to the work put in by moderators and members who have helped to keep things going over the years.

I think the success of this Forum can be attributed to a number of things.

Principally, the huge SCOPE. Despite our "Moniker" - we acknowledge most all other Makes, whether Guitars or Keyboards.

Obviously the degree of expertise will depend on individual user-base and the expertise of those users.

I think it is safe to say that our members all DO Music to some degree, from hosting a Piano/Keyboard at home for

"Family" use for learning to play - children, or themselves, to Composing Music with a Workstation Board or DAW, or indeed

performance at Gigs or worship venues. . . . . not forgetting simply playing to yourself for the sheer joy of doing it.

DOING Music covers a LOT of Bases.

Another reason for our success I think is due to "Peer Recommendation" . . . .

People have discovered that they can get GOOD and UNBIASED advice on a variety of topic areas, including "basic use"

to more advanced or esoteric operations that may be missing from the published manuals.

Keeping older and venerable boards working, is another popular subject - and much knowledge exists on this

within various sections of the forums.

This is all due to our experienced membership, along with a genuine wish to help fellow Musicians.

Add to this the fact that no bullying or flaming is permitted, and spammer's memberships can often be measured in minutes.

As our membership continues to grow, it proves the Peer recommendation point - as well as the fact that we must

be largely "Doing it Right"?

I would say that a big part of it is kindness, the "Supporting Musicians" part. And while there is great collective knowledge and skill on here, there isn't musician snobbery. People can ask any question. Nice people hang out on this website.

I must admit I haven't noticed any issues with any of the fora I frequent (apart from the expected decay of specialised areas as the population moves on to new models (be it synths, guitars or cars). I can understand that some might suffer with the onslaught of 'social' media but what I value most and what keeps me using the time I will spend on such things exclusively on fora is the level of interested intelligent discourse, courtesy and good manners and the firm but gentle moderation which prevents flame wars, IQ zero's and opportunists from polluting the calm and gentle waters in which we swim.

I don't see myself ever participating in FarceTube, Twatter, InstaGrunge or any of the like until in the complete absence of moderation they introduce IQ tests with a sensible threshold before allowing humans to post on such.

Congrats on busting 20K, btw!

Facebook is not all bad. It depends on how you use it. I admin 4 groups and run them in much the same way as I do the forum. Spammers are dealt with very quickly as is anyone who decides to be less than polite and courteous to other members of the groups. I don't really pay much attention to the broader Facebook "noise". So for me, it is still quite useful.

Twitter I use for promoting the forum and the same occasionally with Instagram.

Generally speaking though, this forum is my home and it is where I spend most of my time.

The problem with farcebook is (beside the privacy concerns) that there is no way to hold structured discussions, it's all one long discussion stream and older posts more or less disappear into oblivion. In a forum you have subforums and threads which makes it much easier to find information and to keep discussions focussed on single aspects.

Yes, I agree with that. It is one of the most frustrating things about Facebook. The conversations don't flow in the same way they do on a forum. Often something you have just posted to the group will suddenly disappear down the timeline. And people answering posts can have their comments thrown out of context because of where they appear. If there is one thing I would change about Facebook it would be to have the timeline restructured to be more like a forum :(

My objections to FB are to do with the "Nazis" who scan the content and block posts with no detail as to WHY . . .

Attempting to contact THEM results in a run around that leads to a list of "imaginary" questions and ultimately - a brick wall.

A case in point Saul . . .

I was in a conversation with a FB friend of mine ( A member of the design team of the Alesis Fusion). I think you know who I mean?

It centred around his time at Alesis - and the Instruments he worked on . . .

I thought to include the story of my visit to you, with a psu, to repair your broken 6HD.

I did so, and included the pic of us both WITH the 6HD . . .

The "Nazis" blocked it - saying it violated something or other - and stating that, as a result, no one else could see it . . . :o :o :angry-tappingfoot:

So . . . NO way to enquire WHY - or present a case . . . . . just a faits accomplis . . . . .

THAT . . . IMO . . . is CRAP . . . . Who the Phuk do they think they are?

Facebook is useful for me only in so far as I can promote this site and others. I also use it for some groups that I admin but, here's the thing. You THINK, as admin, that you are in control but you are not, Facebook are. And if their plainly inadequate algorithm comes across something it deems unacceptable it removes it, from YOUR group, even if it is a private group.

I bet it was Facebook that blocked your post and looking at the photo now I think I can see why it was flagged. You are pointing at the Fusion. Think about that for a moment and how it looks to a machine algorithm? :o

It has gotten to the point where we now where everything we post on FB and other social media is being monitored and edited without any input from us.

We had a post deleted from one of the metal detecting groups I run because it was deemed offensive. It wasn't. Any HUMAN looking at it would see it was friendly banter between two members but no, the machine tells us it is offensive so it must be. And off it goes without any consultation with the group admin, me! I can't tell you just how infuriating that is angry-tappingfoot:

So, I only use FB as a tool to promote sites. For anything else, it is pretty much useless.

I think it was a couple of years ago? I may have even started the thread. I'll see if I can dig it out . . .
