Anyone remember the Royal Enfield Interceptor?

Royal Enfield 1.jpg
Royal Enfield 2.jpg

Since the UK demise, I believe they were made in India, originally as "Enfield"

The "Royal" bit wasn't initially allowed and had to be negotiated separately before being eventually added later. . . .

I never ever rode one, but I guess they are classics in their own way . . . .

I never had the pleasure of riding one myself. It was probably just a little before my time. I came to bikes in the mid 70s' so it was all Japanese by then.

I think they have updated the design and the manufacturing process for the Enfield. At least I hope they did! If not you would have to carry a large bag to pick up all the pieces that rattled off and a set of tools to put it all back together again

Yes, I remember Royal Enfield motorbikes ... along with loads from my youth (early and mid sixties).

Along with the old BSAs, Triumphs, Nortons, Velo's, Ariels (Squareiel) and so on.
At the Brooklands Technical College, where I did the study side of my electrical apprenticeship for BAC, there were two NorVins, or were they VinNors?
1,000cc Vincent engine in a Norton Featherbed frame.
I drove one of them up and down the driveway. Frightened me silly. SOOOO much power.
Didn't dare to take it on the road. Chickened out.
There were lots of really beautiful old bikes at "the Tek!"

My first bike was like this one:

Later on, in the mid 70's I had a Honda CB 400/4 for a while.
That was a lovely bike.

I remember the Norton Commander, I think the police used them before the switch to BMW?, BSA and of course, Triumph. I worked at a motorbike dealer for a while and always fancied a Bonneville. I loved how they looked. I wouldn't have actually bought one though. They even leaked oil from new, in the showroom!

My first bike was a Suzuki TS100. :)

Not as interesting looking as a Royal Enfield but I had a lot of fun with it and I travelled a lot of miles on it :)

I remember reading something I found hilarious describing Brittish motorcycles ....... I think it was something like .

"British motorbikes are made for people predisposed to hours of tinkering in the workshop and attacking Aqaba at dawn !"

( I'm assuming that Laurence of Arabia is mentioned in the 'WARNINGS' section of all British bike user manuals πŸ˜…)

I love the sound of the tinkering part !.... Just as long as the Aqaba at dawn part is non-compulsory πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Ahh yes, the good old days of British Motorcycling. More time in the garage than on the road. πŸ˜‚

I had a friend who used to swear by his Bonneville. No, literally swear by it, sat next to it by the side of the road waiting for the RAC to come and put it on a van and take him home 🀣🀣🀣. When he was given a Honda 500 Four as a temporary replacement one day, he was completely shocked and amazed! Powerful, smooth, great handling, and no oil leaks :confusion-confused: He told the shop to keep the Triumph and he bought the Honda. Never had another British bike that I am aware of.

I did own a more modern British bike in the Triumph Trident 900 Sprint. A VERY different bike compared to Brit bikes of the past.

A Dutch engineer friend of mine once told me that British engines will run forever providing you can stop all the oil leaking out!
He said this shaking his head sadly as if he considered it to be beyon the ability of any living soul .πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

That was pretty much the case up until the mid to late 90s'. The industry finally dragged itself into the modern world and was able to get the tolerances fine enough to prevent oil from seeping out. Saved a fortune on oil after that πŸ˜‚.

Although having said that, I think it fair to mention Hesketh, anyone remembers them? They had a pretty good stab at reviving the British bike industry back in the 80s' and as far as I know, they were pretty oil-tight. I am not sure if they are still going. I know the business was sold in 2008 or thereabouts and the new owners continued at least unto 2013. There was a Hesketh 24 demonstrated in 2014 but I don't know what happened after that.

To continue on the subject of machines on two wheels somewhat loosely , I recently hit upon some vids of WW1 radial fighter plane engines being run ( I had no idea !). The crank- shaft is bolted to the plane and the entire engine spins instead . A pretty amazing engineering concept. Some small company has gone back to making them to order , so I believe you can buy one if you fancy and happen to have 25'000 Β£ kicking about .πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚.If you lose a spark plug,it's REALLY lost however !πŸ˜¬πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚
