Some more gigs for parametric . . . .

Unread post by parametric » Wed Nov 09, 2016 9:29 pm

I've been invited (and agreed in principle) to take part in two more commercial ventures with the ECC, coming up VERY shortly. (Isn't that always the way  )

1) London Paladium - 16th November - a live performance of the music from the computer game ‘Skyrim’

I've not seen the score yet, but hoping it will arrive this evening.

Found this on youtube: It sounds MASSIVE/Big Budget - Orchestral/Choral . . .

I'm assured that we're NOT performing the entire 3hrs 39 minutes worth . . . (phew)

details sketchy ATM as to whether there is an accompanying projection being shown . . .

A guide .mp3 has been promised to help "learn" it . . . 8O

2) Sunday 20th November - A session at Abbey Road to record for a new album by Eric Levi - No. VII in his "Era" series.

No further details known at present . . .

I reckon so Miks . . .

I've been associated with the ECC since 1974, but we sort of grew apart for some years until the recent Wakeman

recording and gig.

It's actually very good for me and keeps me active musically. My own stuff has been in the doldrums for some

time now - creative block IYKWIM . . . and something like this gives you a new perspective, so to speak.

There's a rehearsal on Friday - where I'll get a feel for Skyrim - so I'll know more/be happier then . . .

I'll try and remember the camera Peter . . .

Funnily enough, Last time I was at Abbey Road (for the Yamaha Reface Event), I lost my camera at some point.

I must remember to ask if anyone handed it in at AR?

Odd coincidence. Skyrim has just been installed on the PC. Had it a while back but just reinstalled it and then I saw your post Chris :) The music is superb so that should be quite an event!

Concert went well - VERY enthusiastically received by the audience, who appeared to be mostly fans of the Game/Genre . . . The only gaps I could see in the audience seating were due to stairways - so the venue was pretty much filled to capacity.

In the interval, I DID venture into the public area looking to buy a "Program" . . . . There was no official Program :(

The Bar was absolutely heaving - and the Merchandising area was doing good sale in T-Shirts, baseball caps posters etc . . . There were even some tailors dummies set up sporting complete outfits for ~£50

First time EVER for me at the Palladium.

They chopped an hour off our rehearsal time - so it was basically a one-time run through.

Back-stage staffing was NOT good - after about 40 minutes rehearsal we had to go and fetch our own chairs

Add to that, they had the decorators in . . . . very nice, but it stank of Paint and of course there was NO signage back stage . . . just a mass of anonymous doors with the occasional last-minute hand-written A4 stuck on with tape . . . .

The projection screen was set so low, that the choir was only really visible from the Orchestra Stalls. No one in The Grand Tier or "The Gods" could really see us at all.

Despite the minimal rehearsal - it went rather well - the Music was GOOD . . .

One violinist came on-stage wearing a Viking helmet "with the horns" which he wore through the whole performance - got a huge cheer from the audience . . .

I think this is fast becoming the "New" way of delivering Music.

The live show is really the pinnacle of the Art (IMO) and I guess it really doesn't matter precisely HOW it is delivered, or on what pretext?

If audiences open their wallets and have a good time, as a result - then it's "Job Done" surely?

I forgot my own camera in the rush, but found this on YouTube. The audio quality is not great, and it contains the only "Splash" that occurred in the show

The Eric Levi Session at Abbey Road was rather strange . . .

We did all that was required, initially Full SATB, but after a while some TB and then the ladies did some SA on their own . . . We went to the bar in the meantime . . . .

All in all we only sang about 16 bars of Music 8O

So I did not get a feel for the Album at all . . . .

Studio 2 was not ready @ 6pm when we were supposed to start - the previous session having overrun slightly - so we gathered in the bar . . . .

The walls have some very interesting informal pics of artists who have recorded there . . . Several of the Beatles with George Martin (naturally). There was Gerry and the Pacemakers, a particularly nice candid shot of Cilla Black seated in the (then) canteen, with George Martin leaning over with his hands on the table - Cilla is playfully pulling his tie :) . . . There was Cliff Richard and the Shadows and (elsewhere) - Maria Callas, Queen, Kate Bush, Elton John and one of the Goons with a very young Spike Milligan . . . .

There was ONE pic of a rather rotund guy pouring champagne into a tea cup . . . It was Dylan Thomas . . 8O

Other walls were adorned with posters of movies that have had their soundtracks recorded there, notably - all the Starwars series, Lord of the Rings, and the Hobbit - and several Bond Movies.

Some of the Posters carrying hand written thanks from the grateful composers - thanking Abbey Road for their work and dedication . . . . Nice!

There was a little decorating going on - with signage, apologising for the inconvenience . . . .

All in all it is much as I remembered from previous visits . . . . . Some of the corridors with "old" analog kit standing along the walls.

I had previously thought this was due to upgrading, and would be for disposal but was informed on asking, that the gear was just stored there 'til demanded by clients . . . .

I DID take some pics in Studio 2, but spookily they weren't on my SD card when I checked - the battery WAS getting tired . . . . but I managed some in the bar and outside. The outside shot isn't great as it was dark - so not ideal . . . .

Here's a few:

Yours Truly outside the famous door . . .

The plaque to the left of the doorway commemorates Edward Elgar's 1931 recording Session at the Studio

I thought about doing the zebra-crossing shot, but it was too dark and traffic too heavy . .

Next time perhaps? 8)

The pedestrian crossing gets very busy during the day too, as I recall, Chris.

Principally with half-wits, no wait, if they were twice as intelligent they'd be half wits, trying to get their pictures taken whilst rush hour traffic rushes by.
Many years ago this used to be my route to the back of the ICL office in Euston Road. (A rat run.)
After a while, I got so fed-up with the imbeciles I used to try to clip them with the wing mirror as they flung themselves out of the way.
They were fair sport for all us commuters.
So TAKE CARE Chris, the regulars on that route consider the posers to be trophies to be collected! ;-)

I've just been made aware of another engagement . . . . .

Sunday 19th February at Mark Knopfler's Grove Studios . . . . .

To Re-record "Supertzar" from the Sabotage Album. The Choir Arrangement is by Wil Malone - who also Orchestrated the Original "Journey" and "Arthur" Albums for Rick in 1974/75.

This was originally done at Morgan Studios, Willesden High Road Feb-Mar 1975 (Shortly after the Original King Arthur Album there)
