Arturia Keylab Essential 88 Controller Keyboard! - NAMM 2020

Arturia Keylab Essential 88 NAMM 2020.png
This is a rather nice new controller keyboard from Arturia. Especially given the price which I think is around £309.00 8O

Arturia describe the keys as "velocity sensitive with hybrid synth-piano feel" so definitely not weighted hammer action here but I supposed given the price that is perhaps expected. No aftertouch on a controller keyboard? mmmm...not sure about that one. Most controllers are including aftertouch these days

However in mitigation you are getting a ton of software and other features for your money.

Software Specifications:
Includes Analog Lab software with 6500+ synth and keyboard sounds
Includes Ableton Live Lite
Includes UVI Model D

Hardware Specifications:
88 note, velocity sensitive keyboard with hybrid synth-piano feel
Controllers: 1 clickable encoder, 9 encoders, 9 30mm faders, 6 transport switches, 4 command switches, 1 modulation wheel, 1 pitch bend wheel, 8 touch and pressure-sensitive pads
Connectivity: MIDI out, USB, Sustain pedal
Functions as a universal MIDI controller
Twin-line LCD screen
MCU/HUI control compatibility
Chord Play mode

Perfect Analog Lab integration:
Select sounds, browse presets, switch parts, smart-assigned controls.
Standalone or plug-in operation: VST, VST3, AU, AAX.
Over 6500 TAE® and Phi® powered preset sounds from Arturia’s award-winning V Collection
Ableton Live 10 Lite - record, layer, and edit your sounds to create a finished song.
UVI Model D - Sample-based software recreation of Steinway classic.

Compatible with all major Digital Audio Workstation: Pro Tools, Logic Pro X, FL Studio, Bitwig, Cubase, Ableton Live, Digital Performer, Studio One *

Why should the faders be on the left and pads on the right? What rule book was that one in?

Just a word of caution, especially noting the drawbars (and so presumably targeted at organ players), some users of Arturia keyboards are having terrible problems with hanging notes when playing using organ Glissandi techniques. So much so that the author of Cantabile introduced a diagnostic feature to detect hung notes to prove that it was the external keyboard and not Cantabile (a lot of live players use this live VST host).

I have no experience of this issue myself as I do not use Arturia keyboards, but it is worth being aware of this issue if you are thinking of purchasing one.

Why? A dual manual Hammond has drawbars on the left and on the right (and then ones in the middle for the pedal board.....)

Usually non dual organs have drawbars on the left, not right

That's the way I'm used to

Nearly every brand do have the drawbars on the left

Hammond SK1
Nord Electro/ Stage
Korg Kronos
Yamaha Motif
Roland VR
Dexibell S9
Studiologic Numa Compact 2X
Kurzweil Forte
Vox Continental

And a long etc

And of course the brand new Yamaha YC 61

Ok but who said the faders..because that is what they are...were intended to be only used with a Hammond organ VST?

Arturia call them "30mm faders" not drawbars so the connection with organs of any type is simply down to people who want to assign them to organ vst's. And if that is your main interest then surely buy something else right?

There are over Over 6500 sounds included with the Keylab Essential 88 and most of them have nothing to do with organs.
Arturia keylab Essential 88 Faders.png
KeyLab Essential’s 9 faders have multiple modes, depending on the map selection being used. Using the Analog Lab map, the faders control their corresponding parameters displayed within Analog Lab 2. As with the encoders, the parameters being controlled change depending on which preset is selected.

While using the DAW map, faders 1-8 control the volume of 8 channels within your DAW, and fader 9 controls your master volume.

The faders can also control any other MIDI CC parameter you wish while using any of the User maps, and can be assigned using the Arturia MIDI Control Center.
As you can see from the picture of the faders and the description of their many uses, faithful recreation of organ drawbars doesn't come into it.
