The MA36 is one of those incredibly useful devices that can save a LOT of time when trying to find out what data is passing between your midi devices.

Thanks for sharing that Chris (Y)

Someone was in desperate need of a MA-36 or perhaps is hoping they become so rare they might see some profit in it. I would never in a million years pay anything like that sort of money for one of these no matter how useful they are!

@ shadowmask (Brian):

Any chances to produce a small batch of these (on a pcb of course)? Most of the components are available as SMD/SMT parts... Would love to get my hands on one of these...

Problem is Miks, the guts of it is a custom chip that is no longer available . . . .

. . . . not to say it wouldn't be possible for some enterprising individual to reinvent it . . . .

I never quite got that working and it was disassembled for other experiments. I have seen other monitor projects on the web, one was using a two row LCD if I remember correctly.

I don't mean a StudioMaster M-36 which I already have since a few years 8) I'm talking about Brian's "Midi Monitor BreadBoard Edition" shown by clicking the link from my post above... now that would be cool... (Y)

Edit: Brian was answering while I wrote my post..

Oh - bummer. Thought you've had it working...

Whilst I have one of these these as an emergency tool in my gig box, I have never used it. MIDIOX on PC is still the tool of choice for me (a little long in the tooth now, but free and still runs on all versions of Windows). Or Cantabile (my live MIDI/VST host) now has very good MIDI monitoring capabilities built in.

The strength of the MA-36 is that it is stand-alone, and small.

If you keep it with a spare midi lead, you can insert it ANYWHERE in your rig and see what is traveling precisely THERE.

Another great piece of kit is the Kawai MAV-8 midi patchbay. We had them on EVERY composition workstation at the Uni.

It's a neat 1U unit with 4 INs and 8 OUTs (one of each on the front panel) and row of slide switches to patch

anything to anything. Incredibly useful but long since discontinued, they do appear occasionally . . . .

I hear what you say. :)

It depends on the rig you have. Ever since keyboards no longer have MIDI Echo (aka MIDI Merge) I have reconfigured my live rig into a star arrangement, where the PC with Cantabile is in the middle and there is only one MIDI connection to/from each synth. This is a very powerful arrangement given with Cantabile can do in terms of filtering and routing (including state changes in songs). Where the MA36 would still be useful and why I keep it is if for some reason you wanted to diagnose what is coming out of the PC

100% correct Derek - but then you KNOW what you are doing. ;)

The star arrangement is the option to go for, for a rig such as yours.

Midi is already a serial system (that people believe behaves in a parallel way  )

so compounding delays (latency) with long chains is best to avoid.

Shortest route between the controller and sound producing gear is always best. (Y)
