Yamaha SG12 12 string circa 1966 for sale

Unread post by steved » Mon Nov 05, 2018 9:13 pm

Hi guys - with mixed feelings I’ll be listing my Yamaha SG12 12 string circa 1966 for sale on either Ebay or Reverb soon. 3 pickups, beautiful sunburst finish. It’s in great shape with only minor scratches and a little finish wear on the back - great shape for a 52 year old rock guitar. Apparently pretty rare. Made in Japan - labeled “Yamaha Nippon-Gakki Co. LTD”. Hardly used - I’ve been playing acoustic since I was 10...I’m 68 now lol. It has its original rectangular solid case with red plush lining and a red zippered inner accessory case. Not stringed - I started to restring, cleaned the frets, and realized I wanted to sell it and get a really good acoustic. Everything worked about 20 yrs ago. Original very cool tremolo arm with non original tip. Very heavy guitar - I believe it’s solid maple. I’ll have a bunch of photos. If I remember I’ll let the board know when it’s listed for sale. Thanks.
Steve

Hi - here are some photos along with this from Guitar-List.com. I can post more photos upon request.

Series name:
Yamaha SG Series (1965 to 1971 - first era)
Dates of manufacture:
1966 to 1967
The Yamaha SG-12 introduced in 1966, was one of Yamaha's first solid body electrics. Released alongside the SG-12 were the six string SG-2 and SG-3 versions. The SG-12 shares the same complex control circuits as the SG-3 appear rather complicated at first - according to SG-3 owner Gavin Wilson of the guitarz blog the SG-12 has two circuits (rhythm and lead) so you can set up two different tones on the guitar and switch between them,. The volume and tone controls on lower part of the guitar work in the usual way for the main circuit, but the switch nearest the point of the upper horn allows you to select the alternate circuit which has separate volume and tone “wheels” just above the neck pickup. There is a third “wheel” situated slightly apart from the other two, slightly towards the housing for the rear two pickups. Gavin Wilson also notes that the SG-12 has a shorter scale length than the SG-3 and SG-2. most likely to lower the tension of the 12 strings.

I asked Yamaha for more info and they said that “the neck is maple, fingerboard is rosewood and body seems to be Japanese Judas tree (Scientific name : Cercidiphyllum japonicum)”. Still feels as heavy as maple to me

I thank everyone for their interest. As mentioned I’m an acoustical player and will be selling it eventually on Reverb or EBay to allow me to purchase a good acoustical. Probably a Martin D-18 if it sells well :). I’ll post when I list it. Thanks again.
Steve.

Can't wait to see some photos! I've been wanting an SG12 for a couple years now, have been touring with only my SG5 and FG 110 for awhile, so would love to add a 12er of that similar era to the arsenal. Any interest in trades? Cheers

Not sure he ever listed it. Didn't seem sure about if or when it would go up for sale so perhaps not.

Hi all - sorry... I’ve been side-tracked with This Old House repairs (Circa 1845). No - I haven’t put it up for sale yet. I’ll let this board know before I do. My son has convinced me to put new strings on it and try it with an amp we have. Another task for me lol... I’ll try to get to it in the next week or two. I’ll add new pictures at that time. Hopefully I won’t love the sound and decide to keep it lol. Thank you very much for your interest!

Hey Steve. Old houses can be a bit of a constant grind. We lived in a mid 1600's house a while back and although it was nice there was also a never ending list of things that needed attending to! So not at all surprised you find spare time a little scarce at the moment.

If you do decide to sell I don't think it will hang around long ;)

Many thanks Saul. We bought it “on sale” and it is a handful. I’ll still stay in the group after selling - I’ve a Yamaha FN595E along with other guitars. Thanks for being the administrator.
