Eastwood crowdsourcing a Yamaha SX 800B production run

Unread post by Asmikace » Sat Nov 25, 2017 8:08 pm

Eastwood guitars are doing crowd funded production of the Yamaha SX 800B.

http://eastwoodcustoms.com/projects/eastwood-sx-800b/

Any thoughts to this? I would love to have a SX guitar but I would try to get a real deal but I have yet to try out an Eastwood guitar and see how well they copy guitars.

Cool initiative.

I think it will be received well, but having one of the originals keeps my gas down.

Copied text:
The 1977 Yamaha SX 800B is a very rare guitar. It featured three high output single coil pickups giving it a wide-ranging tonal variety from soulful growl to crystal clear. The closest description might be like merging a Fender Strat with a Gibson SG and a Les Paul. These were used by Tommy Bolin with Deep Purple and in earlier days by Rory Gallagher. Here are the specifications for our tribute version:
• BODY: Solid Mahogany with Carved Maple Top
• NECK: SET Mahogany
• FINGERBOARD: Blackwood, Dot Markers with binding on neck and headstock
• SCALE LENGTH: 24 3/4 " (628mm)
• WIDTH AT NUT: 1 11/16 " (42mm)
• PICKUPS: 3 High-Output Single Coil
• SWITCHING: 5-way
• CONTROLS: 2 Volume, 1 Tone
• BRIDGE: Tune-O-Matic
• HARDWARE: Gotoh Nickel/Chrome
Final Price $599 + shipping (less deposit). All pre-funded instruments will include a custom fit gig-bag. Expected Ship date March 2018

Definitely interesting but is this not an exact copy of the original minus the Yamaha logo on the headstock? Are they allowed to copy the design like that?

Good question, but I recon Eastwood have permission ..... if not, they have a lawsuit. :/:

There must be some kind of agreement, Eastwood have done A LOT of other remakes:

Well I hope it all goes well for them. The Chinese have been doing this sort of thing for quite a while now. They produce copies of most makes and just leave the headstock blank or put whatever name you want on it as long as it's not the logo of the company they are ripping off. Still, it's one thing to copy a design but quite another to make it with decent materials and good quality control which I assume is what Eastwood are doing.

If anyone buys one please let us know how you get on with it.

I think that's a pretty good price considering the originals now are priced in the 1,000.00 or better range.

I think it's a great idea to crowd source each guitar. That way your keeping overheads to a minimum and KNOW you have the orders. I can only wish Eastwood well with it. Very interested to hear from anyone who buys one of these SX 800B's

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the friendly invitation, Saul! This is Vince from Eastwood Guitars. We've had quite a few requests over the years to do a take on an SG-styled Yamaha, and as we dug into it, we realized we really like the old SX series.
Not here to come across as sales-y or to preach - but if you've got any questions I'll do my best to help out. Please bear in mind that this is still in the very early stage of development.

One of the cool things about crowd-sourcing this way is that we get a lot of feedback on the models before they're put into production. It is not uncommon for colour options to be added, or change due to popular demand during the funding process. We're always open to suggestions and ideas, or even just a friendly chat about guitars ;)

Anyways, I'll poke my head in here when I can. Thanks again for welcoming me in - very excited about this one!

Hi Vince, Welcome to the forum and the string section. :D

The crowdfunding process is very interesting. ((i))
I can see that the SX model needs 1200$ to get going, 900$ is already collected so far and the prepaid amount is 150$ for each guitar.
Now here comes the question: will you actually produce the guitar even if only 8 guitars are ordered/prepaid ?

Does Eastwood have to pay licence/royalties for using designs already built by other manufactures ?

The Backlund 400 is imo. the wildest creation, reminds me of the Jetsons and eventually ..... I WANT ONE :D

Best Regards
Peter

Hi Peter,

Great questions! Typically, we need to reach the funding goal before the instruments go into production. On occasion we make an executive decision to build them anyway if we're short, and if we forecast enough interest in the future.

Selecting the instruments we choose to make is part of a process, and of course permissions is a part of that. If we can't do them, or are asked not to do them, then we don't.

Yes, the Backlunds are crazy - right up our alley 8)

Well :D not quite what George asked for, but a VERY COOL MODEL never the less. ((i)) and ... already available.

Two awesome guitars from the Glam Rock 70's that would be cool to own: Dave Hill's Superyob and Gerry Shephard's Star Guitar.

They have already been produced, but VERY pricey.
