I was surprised to find there are two versions of those knobs. The early ones were set screw and the black part is metal. Later they changed it to plastic and they were push on.
As I said, IMO the SA-5 was build to a higher spec/quality instrument... You will also find this reflected in their hard shell cases...
I’ve seen the metal knobs on the lowly sa-30t... there was at least one online that had those and I could tell by the set screw. The change from metal to plastic is most likely by date, not by model. This is reflected later in the use of the same speed knobs across the entire range of guitars and basses from late 70s to early 90s.

Well, with Yamaha one never knows. Any pics of that SA-30 with that particular knob? Do you recall when you saw it online? I presume you mean on ebay or so.

The only one I have seen on an SA-30 is documented by me on this page:

I checked out the SA30s in the link with painted F holes. Must have been a clever tech to get them wired up.

Hi,

New to the forum.
Glad to se vintage guitars on here!
Does anyone recall the type of pickups in the SA -5’s and their output.
Curious to know.

I just picked one up earlier today.

Thanks for your time gents!

The man who started this post is the real expert on these most of the information you want is on his site here

If there's anything he's not covered no doubt he will reply to this himself soon.

Oh dear, that looks like an SA-5 in very good nick. I just had to check if mine was still in my room as I have the same colour, same case, the same Yamaha strap and blue tool kit :D

I really need to update my SA-5 web page as I do have one and know a few more things about them.

Please tell me (or PM) your serial number and I will measure the pickups this weekend. They are humbuckers BTW, but with a smaller hum bucking coil.

Enjoy that great gat!

Glad to hear you still have it!
I read up about the SA’s on your site. Thanks for the info. What a tone these things make!
Do you know much about the wiring and pots used, or the type of wood the body and neck are?
She’s almost mint and for sure my new favorite guitar!

It's been loved to bits!
Another SA-5 with the bridge pickup 'reversed'. Noticed that on a few of them... wonder why... Mine came like that but I put it back to normal again.

My sa-30t came with the bridge pup reversed also. And I also switched it back. Half of the ones I see are reversed. Likely reversed to diminish the treble. Or someone reassembled it incorrectly. I sometimes see the jack plate upside down too.
